Problem with Catalyst 7.1 and ATI Radeon X1950 Pro

Frank K.

I recently bought the ATI Radeon X1950 Pro AGP card. I installed the drivers
on the included CD. Everything worked fine. I downloaded Catalyst 7.1 and
followed the uninstall procedure. After installing 7.1 my display was upside
down. I tried to turn it using Catalyst, but it wouldn't do it. I
uninstalled 7.1 and went back to the CD and again everything is fine.

I would like to update to 7.1 but I'm not sure how to correct the upside
down display.

I initiated a ticket on the ATI site, but haven't heard anything as yet.

My system:

Dell Dimension 8300
Pentium 4, 3.4Ghz CPU
2 Gigs RAM
Windows XP Pro
Gateway 24" widescreen monitor

Thanks

I had trouble with catalyst also, not upside down but wierd performance
after an install that didn't go smoothly. I went and got the new Omegas and
everything is nice now. I have the same X1950 pro AGP based card as you do.

Cat 7.1 does not support the x1950pro. If you install it, all you will get
upgraded is the catalyst control center, not any of the drivers. If you go
to the driver download page, select component downloads, you will see a
notice "For those looking for drivers for the x1950pro see this" or
something like that. It will send you to the driver package that came with
the card cd.

I have been complaining to ATI about the lack of driver support for the last
three cat updates. Last month I was told to wait for Cat 7.2. That their
were big changes in the works and the x1950pro will be updated at this time.

You should be able to update the ccc to 7.1 if you want to, I did, but you
will see the same old 2d, 3d, and openGL drivers listed after the update.
You aren't missing much.

The only big problem I have is flashing (turning off and on) of my second
monitor on boot-up. Hope this gets fixed.

Thanks William,

After several tries, I finally got it to install correctly and all is well.

The drivers I have now are dated 12-16-06, version 8.33.0.0. I don't
remember the date or version of the original drivers.

There is one thing about the installation I don't understand. The first few
times I ran the software I kept getting a message saying the software must
be installed in administrator mode. I am the only user on this computer and
as such, I am the administrator. The time I was successful is immediately
after re-insalling the software on the CD. I installed it without going
through the uninstall procedure.

What is the difference between the PRO and non Pro cards? I have an X1950 CF
Edition and I have no problems with the 7.1 drivers, or their install. I
have the HIS version, which is the same as the XTX (650/2000 GDDR4).

New graphics processor unit and design structure. A completely different
card. The x1950pro is the first of many new cards from ATI to be introduced
in the upcoming months based on this new gpu design.

Err, I did write that my 1950 was the same as an XTX. I did compare mine
with the Pro and it exceeds the Pro everywhere.
Thanks for the link.
My HIS is faster than most other makers 1950 CF Edition and why I bought it.
