Problem with automatic updates

I've got an old pc that was wiped by a virus so i used my old windows
2000 on it and I'm gradually reloading all the software. I've updated
it to SP4, through the windows site but I'm having a problem with
automatic update. In the control panel i click the icon and tick the
automatic box, but then it resets to off next time. I go to the windows
update site and try to set it there but again it doesn't "stay put". I
get the option to download the update software but this doesn't help.
Bearing in mind the pc was blank this morning and i may not have loaded
all the software/windows options available can anyone suggest why it
won't stay as automatic update??

Have just downloaded activex and directx - is this enough?

There are manu updates past SP4 that modify problem with Auto Update. I
know ... I'm sending you this from Windows 2000. You probably don't even
have Windows Installer 3.1 yet nor the update Windows Update support
software (BITS, ...).

So where can I get all the necessary software to enable the updates and
which ones do I need?
