Problem starting XP

M

Mosty

My computer just had the following error message
when I tried to start it--

"It says Windows could not start because the following
file is missing
or corrupt:
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows
Setup using the
original Setup CD-ROM

Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair"

I have the original setup CD's for system recovery, but
they indicate that my hard drive will be deleted. I do
not have a floppy drive on my computer which was one of
the suggestions I received, and I did not receive the
original windowss CD-ROM with my computer. My computer
is a hewlett packard and they basically suggest
reinstalling the entire thing or finding a CD from a
friend, which I have been unable to do. Any help would
be appreciated.

I also have this specific problem. The hotfix referred
to is specifically for NON oem os's. I and the orig
questioner have oem os's. Any further advice? The error
calls for the orig setup disks and oem's wont supply this.
