my problem is that i start mycomputer and it starts its process but then it
stops and displays...WINDOWS COULD NOT START BECAUSE THE FOLLOWING FILE IS
CORRUPT OR MISSING : \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM.

it also says .. YOU CAN ATTEMPT TO REPAIR THIS FILE BY STARTING WINDOWS
SETUP BY USING THE ORIGINAL SET UP CD-ROM
SELECT "R" AT THE FIRST SCREEN TO START REPAIR.

my problem is that this has not worked at all for me.

That's because the order of boot devices still has your Hard Disk before your
CD drive.

Next time you switch on, hit Del straight away to get into your CMOS setup.
Select "Advanced", then "Boot Device order", and make your CD drive the
FIRST device (it should currently be set to your floppy drive). Hit "F10"
then "Y" and "Enter". Make sure your Windows CD is in the drive, and your
puter should reset. The screen will say something like "Boot from CD: Press
any key to boot from CD", and go from there.

You will of course have to reset your CMOS back to the way it was after
you've done your repair.

BTW, I found that hitting "R" for a repair is not a good idea: you are
merely put into a DOS shell in the C:\WINDOWS directory: not helpful!!! If
you select the "Full Install" option, it will detect a "previous
installation" of Windows, and THEN give you an option to repair!! Go with
that one!

Hope this helps,

Mark

OK, just to clarify:

You're booting with your Windows CD, and getting to the "Hit <Enter> to
install, R to Repair" screen; you're hitting <Enter> to install; it checks
for previous versions; then either (a) doesn't find one, or (b) finds one
but doesn't give you an option to repair instead of overwrite?

If this is right, then I think there's a thread dealing with this problem
in one of the other forums (sorry, can't remember which, but it's a
relevant one ;-) )
