Problem handling video pause and resume

Hi everybody,

I've got a problem managing videos in PowerPoint. I need to pause the
video at certain time instants. Every time the video pauses, I explain
something, click and the video should resume (from the point it was
paused), and so on. I don't know how to do this. I know how to specify
a pause event for a certain time instant, but then I don't know how to
say: "If I click, resume the video". I tried inserting another pause
event that is triggered with a click, but it doesn't work.

Please, let me know any suggestions. I've been stuck with this for
quite a long time!

This should be the default when you insert a video. Are you clicking ON the
video itself (not just on the slide)

The custom animation should be movie action > pause >trigger (name of video)

Yes, that's the default settings. However, I want to introduce pauses
at specific time instants, and also that the video resumes when I
click. That's where the problem appears.

The only solution I can think of is to split up the video with a video
editing tool. But this is quite cumbersome, as I have several time
instants at which I would like to pause the video...

Select the movie on the slide. It should have the default play settings and
pause-trigger.

Now, Add Effect | Movie Actions| Pause.

Click Pause in the custom animation task pane. Select "start with previous."

Click the arrow next to Pause in the task pane and turn on "show advanced
timeline." Drag the orange Pause triangle to where you want it to begin. (Or
double-click the Pause in the task pane and set this start time in the Delay
area on the Timing tab.)

Repeat for additional pauses.

The pause stops the video at the specified time; the default trigger makes
it start again when clicked.

first thought but for me it works with a single pause but if I have more it

Its strange I dont see why it doesnt work for me, I expected it to! I only
set two pauses. It worked fine with one but not with more. I'll experiment.

Are you clicking the video itself to unpause? I set up the pauses to happen
at specific times, but (at least the way my setup seems to work) you have to
click the video with the mouse to unpause.

Whats happening to me is that the second pause is unpausing the first if you
see what I mean. (I have quite short time delays set) I'm still experimenting
maybe with longer times it will work.

Experiment over!

With longer time intervals it seems to work but if you leave it long enough
without clicking on the video the second pause does restart the video (for me
anyway). I think in real life if you stopped to talk the vid would restart
unexpectly

In my case, it does not work even with a single pause event:

-The second (and last) event in the default trigger (pause/resume)
starts with a click. So I guess that adding a third event with "start
with previous" won't work unless I click... And that's not what I want,
I just want to pause the movie at a certain time instant (without
having to click).

-If I insert the new event (pause at a certain point) between the first
and the second default events, then the video pauses where I want, but
then clicking on it just re-starts the video from the beginning.

What do you think about this? Am I missing something here?

I'm completely lost, I don't know how to solve this. I hope you can
help me! If needed, you can send me some example by email to test if it
works in my environment.

It does work with one pause the custom animation should read

Start (after previous)
Pause (with previous) In timing set delay to xx seconds as required
Trigger name of video
Pause (on click)

seconds. I didn't leave it very long before clicking to unpause, though.

I had faced a similar issue while implementing off-screen media controls in
PowerShow. The problem is: When you add a Pause Movie Action, PowerPoint
adds a toggle (between pause and resume) action by default. There is no way
to change this default. But there is VBA to our rescue. The following macro
converts all toggles to actual pauses.

I'm not sure if I understood you, I don't have experience with macros.
Would that macro solve my problem? How can I apply it in my slide such
that it will be executed during the presentation? I'm not sure either
what you mean by "toggle events".
