Problem Boot Hard Drive

P

Paul

Many problems with 40gb Boot Drive (divided into C:\ & D:\
running XP. Able to restart after tapping drive.

Installed 120gb second drive (divided E:\ and F:\) as slave

Used Partition Magic to copy partition C:\ to E:\ and data
from D:\ to F:\ So far so good.

Plan was to use management\disk management to change C:\
to G:\ and E:\ to C:\ and reboot on new 120gb drive. Then
format old 40gb drive to use as storage for old data etc.
But management\disk management will not allow me to do this

I have Norton Ghost but this did not pick up the hidden
files and boot files when backing up to CDs.

I have programmes that require a cost from the provider to
re-install again to a new hard disk. I am not willing to
pay the cost again.

Anyone any ideas. I know that FDisk used at bootup would
have allowed me to change E:\ to C:\ etc but this fweature
does not come with XP and I don't know if it will harm
windows.

I am at a loss - will welcome any ideas on procedure.

Hi, Don't use fdisk with XP.
You should be able to use norton ghost to copy the 40G disk directly to the
120G disk when booting from the ghost floppy disk. I am assuming that the
version of ghost you have will recognise a 120g drive. After you have copied
the 40g disk to the 120g disk the partition sizes should alter as a
percentage of the 120g disk.(so if your 40g was split 50/50 the 120g will be
50/50)
You may need to boot from the XP CD and use the repair console and use
FIXBOOT or FIXMBR if the new drive doesn't boot when you have put that in as
the primary master & make sure the HD links are in the right place.
It worked for me.

Best of luck

Neil
