Replacing Hard Drive by using Partition Magic (Windows XP)

P

Paul Bronson

I am running Windows XP

I have a dodgy 40gb hard drive (partitioned into C:\ and
D:\) that requires a slight tap every now and then to
enable it to be rebooted.

Installed a new 120gb hard drive as a slave. Used
Partition Magic to divide into E:\ and F:\

I have programmes that require payment to software
provider everytime you re-install. So don't want to go
down that path again.

Backed up all of 40gb drive to CDs using Norton Ghost but
it missed the boot files and hidden files. Re-installing
did not copy across the boot files. So another plan of
attck -

Copied the C:\ partition with Partition Magic to E:\ and
copied D: to F:\ So far so good.

XPs disk management does not allow you to rename a
partition as C:\

How do I now make the new 120gb drive the boot drive? I
don't want to lose what I have on the old 40gb drive until
after I have proved the new 120gb workable.

Any ideas on procedure required?

Hi, Don't use fdisk with XP.
You should be able to use norton ghost to copy the 40G disk directly to the
120G disk when booting from the ghost floppy disk. I am assuming that the
version of ghost you have will recognise a 120g drive. After you have copied
the 40g disk to the 120g disk the partition sizes should alter as a
percentage of the 120g disk.(so if your 40g was split 50/50 the 120g will be
50/50)
You may need to boot from the XP CD and use the repair console and use
FIXBOOT or FIXMBR if the new drive doesn't boot when you have put that in as
the primary master & make sure the HD links are in the right place.
It worked for me.

Best of luck

Neil
