Problem accessing ftp sites

John

I initially had some version of IE 5 with my Windows 98SE
on my old machine. I am now using my old machine away from
home and upgraded from MS to IE 6.

A funny thing is happening. When I first set up with IE5 I
had everything working fine, but tweaked around a bunch of
stuff (the configs were after all years old) and suddenly
I was able to do everything except access (with IE5) my
ftp sites for my ISP provider's personal webpage and my
school (neither of which support anonymous ftp).

When I upgraded to IE6 it suddenly started working again
so I figured it was something I had done.

Wrong, now IE6 exhibits the same behavior and I really
have not made any changes to it.

Basically I know everything outside of IE is working
because I can use the clunky Web Publisher wizard to ftp
files to the upload servers.

But for some reason my access thru IE to ftp sites keeps
getting messed up.

FWIW it works great on my nice new XP machine at home, but
it is just not going to work to bring that on the road
with me.

Please help a poor starving college student.

How are you accessing these FTP sites, could this be the issues.

Fix if This problem occurs after you apply the 832894 security update
(MS04-004) or the 821814 hotfix.

SYMPTOMS
Programs that use Wininet functions to post data (such as a user name or a
password) to a Web server retry the POST request with a blank header if the
Web server closes (or resets) the initial connection request.

I am using Win98SE/IE6 (98SE is, exactly, 4.10.2222A a
registered OEM copy and IE is, exactly, 6.0.2800.1106IC w/
128-bit and SP1 which I downloaded from microsoft as a
free upgrade to my OEM IE5) and just typing in the
ftp://ftp.* url in the browser. It works fine every time
on any other computer I have ever tried (including my XP
machine). And it worked when I first upgraded to IE6 and
it worked when I first turned my machine on with IE5
originally. But something is happening in the system that
is causing me to get "canot find server" or some such JUST
for those ftp sites.

These sites _are_ restricted-access ftp sites which do not
allow anonymous ftp and require a username/password login.

This is on multiple sites, and I _can_ use the Web
Publishing wizard in 98SE to upload files, so I know it is
not the sites or the DSL ISP. But I do not know for sure
if it is a 98 problem or IE problem per se (though it
seems to occur regardless of IE version).

I have tried IE repair no effect (except to put the
stinking icon on my desktop again).

Check your File menu after you try this to see if the Login As...
menu item is then there. If so try using it and then Refresh the page
if necessary.
