Printer networking with Windows 98

Guest

I have the network going fine between Windows XP and the old Windows 98
computer, with file sharing. But I can't get the Windows 98 to print on the
printer, which is connected to the Windows XP printer. I can see it in
Network Neighborhood, and the path and share name are correct.
I used to have the HP psc 1210 all in one installed on the win98, but now
have it hooked up to the XP. I have print sharing enabled, and had
uninstalled the HP from win98, and using the Add a Printer Wizard, tried to
install it as a network printer. No luck.
In the XP printer sharing options, there is a place where it says you can
add printer drivers so a computer running an older version of windows can
access the printer.
If I click on Win98, a dialogue box appears saying "Please provide a printer
driver. type the path where the file is located, and click OK. I assume I
would put my Win98 CD in drive D? But where on the Win98 CD exactly is the
printer driver I need?

Thanks for any help.

The Win98 printer driver isn't on the Win98 CD. It's on the CD that
came with the printer.

Installing the printer on Win98 as a network printer should work.
What happened when you tried?

Does the 1210 model support networked use? If so do you have the drivers
with network support loaded? Not all HP models support network use, and
those that do require drivers that support network operation.

I just tried installing it again as a network printer, and it only installed
the View and Print and Help featues, and not the printer. I'm going to
uninstall again and try installing it as a local printer?

I think it's network compatible. It's just a couple of years old. When I go
to add a printer, network, have disk, when I select HP info from the drop
down list,, I get an error that says Select Device: The specified location
does not contain information about your hardware. Once I cancel out of that
box and out of the wizard, HP starts installing again, with the Photo and
Imaging.

As for the drivers, I don't know. I would assume so, since I had the psc all
in one installed as a local printer on the win 98 at one time, and now
installed on the XP as the local printer.

Boy, I feel like a dummy. Went to the HP site, and it is not Network ready.
Guess I would have to get a print server, or anything that I would want to
print from the Win 98 I would have to share with the XP and print from there.
Thanks for your time.

I'm glad you got it figured out in the end, even if it wasn't quite the
answer you wanted. A print server probably won't help the problem, but
sharing the document and printing it from XP should do the trick.
