Printer Icon NOT in Notification Area

M

Mike

Hello,

I recently upgraded all my department's workstations to
Windows XP Professional from WIN2K. In the past when a
print job was sent to a network printer an icon would
appear in the notification area until the job was printed.
Now that I have upgraded, none of the workstations will
show the icon. This Documents Pending item is listed in
Customize Notifications within Taskbar and Start Menu
Properties but no change in the situation is apparent if
the item is hidden or always shown. This feature was very
worthwhile for showing when a print job was complete for
larger print jobs or when the printer was very busy.

The Windows XP Professional documentation states: "While a
document is printing, a printer icon appears in the
notification area. When this icon disappears, your
document has finished printing."

How can I turn this feature on???

Thanks in advance.

If the firewall is enabled on the clients you will need to turn on the ports
for file sharing for this functionality to work even thought the clients do
not share a printer.

Alan,

I appreciate your response to my question however the
information you provided did not solve my problem.

The firewall was not enabled on my clients. I then enabled
the the firewall and opened the ports for file sharing
listed in:

http://www.microsoft.com/security/protect/ports.asp

After rebooting the client I tried printing from several
programs and still, no icon in the sysytem tray.

Can you recommend any further actions I can take to enable
this feature?

I am assuming that notifications are enabled on the client
for connections
Printers Folder / File / Server Properties / Advanced / Show informational
notifications for network printers.

If the workstations connect to a networked printer not hosted on a server
Printers Folder / File / Server Properties / Advanced / Show informational
notifications for local printers.

If these are connections what is the operation system on the server.

Both boxes are checked, show informational
notifications for local printers and show informational
notifications for network printers.

All printers are connected to an Intel Netport Express
PRO/100 print server which is logged into a Netware 5.0
server.

As a test, if you share the printer from one of the XP machines, do you get
a tray icon on the client? Not sure about notification from Netware.
