Pricelessware Firewalls

I just noticed the Pricelessware download links for Kerio and ZoneAlarm
refer to earlier versions of the products. Does this imply that these
versions are more reliable than their later counterparts?

I know there were numerous problems with ZA 5.0 when it was first
released but we're now at version 5.5. One would expect the problems to
have been fixed by now. I'm only interested in the performance of the
firewall function and not that of the bells and whistles. Guess that
narrows the focus down to the free version.

Many people prefer earlier versions of both. Kerio 2.1.5 is generally
considered superior to the newer 4.xx versions.

Kerio 4 works fine for me. It's a bit more user friendly too. I've heard
there is a security hole in v2.1.5.

Yeah, there is a fragmented packet problem with 2.1.5. Some say it's
not a big problem, but others are avoiding 2.1.5 because of it. I
personally don't use it anymore myself. But of the two (4 and 2), I'd
have to say that 2.x is still more popular. If 4 works for you then by
all means use it... I had high hopes for 4, but find that some of the
bugs are too annoying, like the duplicate logging when you enable
logging to closed ports, and so on. I find that Jetico Personal
Firewall is a better choice for me, and it's free. 1.0 is finally out.

Don't forget about this SoftPerfect's Personal Firewall. It's freeware
& it looks to have great potential, too.

SoftPerfect Personal Firewall is a free network firewall designed to
protect your PC against attacks from the Internet or via a local area
network.
SoftPerfect Personal Firewall offers customizable security using
user-defined rules for packet filtering. It works at a low level and
also allows you to create rules based on non-IP protocols such as ARP.

SoftPerfect Personal Firewall supports multiple network adapter
configurations. This allows you to apply a rule, for example, for just a
modem connection or you could apply separate rules for each system
interface. With a flexible filtering system, trusted MAC address
checking feature and separate network adapter configuration you can even
use it on a router or a server.

SoftPerfect Personal Firewall has a learning mode, which prompts you for
required actions when it detects an unknown packet. This helps you to
create customized rules quickly. The program is easy to use, comes with
a set of predefined rules and it is completely free. Additional features
include password protection, logging and more.
