Pricelessware Cd -- Distribution

H

Hal Hersh

I've successfully downloaded the 2004 pricelessware CD in 'iso' form, and
burned it to a CD in program form. Would it be OK if I make copies of the
program CD for members of a user's group to which I belong?

You'd need to speak to Susan about that but my understanding is, the PW CD
may only be distributed on CD.

Of course you can, as long as it doesn't have anything to do with PL or
a.c.f. until you ask the group. And then I don't think you should without
the above caveats.

Cheers for correcting me (knew I'd miss something, hehe).

There were two independent questions. The first was whether someone could
redistribute local physical copies of the PL CD. That is the purpose of
the project, so your answer was yes.

The other, independent question, it can be broken into parts. One is the
assoication with ACF and PL. Here is the next:

Can the permissions gained from the authors to have their programs
included on a CD -- be mutated into an interpretation of permission
to redistribute their programs individually on the internet?

I'd say the answer to the second question is no. AINAL, etc (and maybe
IAANAL.)

.. . .

Other note. Good to Ceg for making the effort to enquire. I see another
thread here today, Buzzy, where he has stated to up and proceed with such
action. I hope this is not the start of an avalanche.

As a poster in ACF, I formally want to be disassociated from any such
disregard of the PL redistribution agreeement. (N'importe from which
quarters such action arises.) I feel there is obligation to respect
the relationships with PL authors.

The correspondence Susan had with the program authors included this
link-
http://www.pricelessware.org/2004/proposal-CD.htm

On this page it states-
"After the CD is created a few copies will be burned and sent to
alt.comp.freeware participants who have offered to help begin the
distribution process. (NOTE: an ISO of the CD may be available for
download if details can be worked out.)"

That covers the ISO distribution permission, in my opinion.

I agree, though, I'm not a lawyer, either.
AINAL? Is that what it sounds like it is? ;)

When the project was first discussed I offered to burn regardless of
EULAs, that was promptly shot down by several legitimate protests.
Regardless, I continued with the project, volunteering to abide by its
agreed upon distribution methods.
I don't think it's unfair to require others to abide by those same
requirements.

You should give a copy to the local library
