Preview pane difficulties

Hi there

A few months ago I managed to break movie maker to the point where I would
load it up and it would go completely non-responsive instantly, I spent about
two weeks trying to fix it, installing new codecs, fiddling with registry,
etc etc... until to my joy (?) I had cause to reinstall Windows for other
reasons. Since then the program is at least useable.

However, I'm unable to view things in the preview pane. Using the various
Play buttons both in collections and on the timeline/storyboard have no
effect, and the controls on the preview pane itself are greyed out. Currently
I'm having this problem with .avis, a format which i've used in the past
without incident.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

As a PS, using my boyfriends computer for now (I'm really keen on the current
project, lol), one out of my hundred avi files is claiming it needs a new
codec. His computer isn't on the internet, so I can't have the program
download the codec automatically - any suggestions on where I should look?

The following freebie will tell you
which codec created the .avi.
Then you'll know what to download.

GSpot

Although I'd be wary of downloading codec's as they can cause more trouble
than they solve. Often MM cannot sue the codec in the manner other
programmes can, so media player can often call the codec to play the file
but MM cannot do so to edit it.

My choice would be to find out what sort of file it is using Gspot as
recommended by John adn then convert it to wmv for editing. Converters here

Thanks all for the help with codecs, I've got that fixed now. Anybody got any
ideas in regard to the original problem with the preview pane?

What happens if you drag a clip to the
timeline? If you select a clip on the timeline
with a left click does the preview pane
remain dark?

If the answer is yes, you may have a problem
with your video driver.
