Prevent Quicktime's qttask and Windows Messenger from automatic startup?

P

Peter Sale

Because of an audio conflict, I would like to prevent Apple QuickTime Pro's qttask.exe from automatically starting up when I start Windows XP Pro (still SP 1) on my PC. I have already tried un-checking the box for "all" the occurrences of "qttask" that appear within
Start=>Run..=>msconfig=>startup

but somehow QuickTime just adds another qttask to the mix, and checks it. I have also tried a shareware utility from "PC Magazine" called Startup Cop Pro, but somehow QuickTime Pro gets around this also, inserting itself back into my system the next time I boot my PC.

I do use QuickTime to display panoramas on my website, http://petersale.com/property5_vt.html, so I don't want to just uninstall it. But I would like to tightly control when it runs, and NOT allow it to run any piece of itself at startup.

I would also like to prevent Window's Messenger for starting itself automatically when I start my PC. It's not hurting anything, but I don't need it all the time and would like to my PC to start up faster. Same problem though, if I attempt to un-check Windows Messenger (4.7.2009) via
Start=>Run..=>msconfig=>startup

it somehow manages to recheck itself and automatically start the next time I boot my PC?

QuickTime is a persistent pest, as Real Player is. It is supposed to
work by unchecking a box in the Preferences, about automatic updating,
but the thing does not work well. I, periodically, uncheck the boxes in
the startup. It does not bother me, other than the fact that it is there.
As for the second question, I am using a smakll program which
configures Windows. http://www.xp-antispy.org/
It has worked like a charm. I did not uninstall WM, just set it to do
nothing.

Do this from within Quick Time's Preferences, not msconfig. Start Quick
Time and go to its Preferences. Uncheck the options for system tray and
automatic update.

Same thing here. Do it from within the program's own Preferences. Open
Windows Messenger and uncheck the three boxes relating to starting up
with Windows. Then exit the program.

I started the Windows Messenger 4.7 (4.7.2009), and navigated to
Tools=>Options...=>Preferences
In the General section under the Preferences tab I un-checked
Run this program when Windows starts
Allow this program to run in the background
Show me as "Away" when I'm inactive for xx minutes

Malke, are these the three boxes "relating to starting up" that you were
referring too?

OK, I know how to un-check the box for "each" occurrence of "qttask" that
appears within my Windows XP Pro system under
Start=>Run..=>msconfig=>startup

and there is sometimes more than a single occurrence of "qttask" that
appears in msconfig's startup "folder." However, how do I locate and safely
remove the "startup key" for qttask" in the registry? Lastly, if I rename
qttask.exe to, say, qtrash.exe, will I still be able to manually start the
QuickTime Player to view MOV files?

Yes. I don't use Windows Messenger, but I've been told to disable those
three boxes in order to prevent it from thinking it should be around at
startup. I'm not 100% sure the third item is necessary, but I always
uncheck it on clients' machines, too.

Also, if you use Outlook Express there is another box that you need to
*uncheck* to prevent automatically logging onto Windows Messenger when
you start OE. I don't know if there is a similar gotcha in Outlook. I
really can't imagine what some of these developers are thinking when
they insinuate their programs into Startup!

Cheers,

Malke

I do use OE v6 to post and read to various newsgroups. So please don't
leave me hanging in suspense; what must I do so that starting Outlook
Express does NOT also start Windows Messenger?

Greetings Peter,

Just close Outlook Express, then download and run the following .reg file:
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/downloads/stopmessenger_oe.reg

After this, Messenger will no longer be associated with Outlook Express in any way shape or
form.

Hi,

Actually that won't just remove it from that profile, that'll remove it from the machine.
This is fine, however, you'll also be breaking Remote Assistance, Whiteboard and Application
Sharing features within Windows and MSN Messenger 6.x by doing this.

Many thanks to R. McCarty and Jonathan.

I would like to emphasize that I use Windows (not MSN) messenger all the
time, especially while giving and getting Remote Assistance on my Windows XP
Pro SP1 PC. So, I will not be running R. McCarty's command any time soon.

Jonathan, I just ran you .reg file and will test it over the next few days.
At the very least it does not seem to have broken anything. Again many
thanks.

BTW, why does Outlook Express start Windows Messenger for anyway?

G-d only knows. The option is under Options, I believe. You'll find it.

Hi Peter,

Outlook Express uses Messenger to display the contact status of your Messenger contacts in
its "Contacts Pane".

QTTask is useless. It only serves to speed the launch time of Quicktime
Player. So you can delete it without any problem.
QTTask comes back in your registry (to launch itself on the next boot) as
soon as you launch an html page with QT contents.

An other way to get ride of this annoyance is to make a little startup
script to remove automatically the QTtask launch entry in the registry.

Do a "startup.reg" file with the following :

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"QuickTime Task"=-

Then a "startup.cmd" located in your startup folder where you call the .reg
to merge (in fact, here, to erase... even if there is nothing !) with this
kind of syntax :

REGEDIT /S "%userprofile%\startup.reg"

BEST solution is to remove the piece of crap entirely.

You can play ALL Quicktime files without the crap that comes with the
program by simply installing "Quicktime Alternative". It's free.
And there is also a "RealPlayer Alternative" to replace that turd
with.
