Disabling Quicktime on Start Up

I am trying to stop Quicktime from loading on start-up in my Windows
XP system. First off, I used MSCONFIG and went to the start-up tab
and Quicktime is NOT listed there. Then, using Mike Lin's Startup
Control Panel, I delete the Quicktime task. Yet each time I reboot my
PC, is comes back!

I checked the settings in Quicktime itself and there doesn't appear to
be an option to make it not load at start-up.

So what do I do next?

From within Quicktime, disable the tray icon and automatic updates.

QuickTime adds itself to the HKLC run key. It's "Quickly"
approaching the irritation level of Real Audio & AOL stuff.

Just run MsConfig and uncheck the entry for Quicktime.

-or- if you're Registry savvy,
Regedit & navigate to
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]

Look in the Right pane for a subkey with Quick in the path name
Right click it and choose Delete.

The option for Quicktime is unchecked in MSCONFIG. I navigated to the
registry key you mentioned and Quicktime isn't listed there either.
I've got automatic updating turned off in the program itself and the
option for it to run in the systray unchecked too. Where else could
it be loading from?

Sorry, I made a mistake. In that Registry key you want to look
for an entry for qttask.exe. That's what runs at startup that you
need to disable/remove. If that's not present, then can you post
which version of QuickTime is installed. I've not used it for a
few years and may not be up to date on how to "Neuter" it's
startup Watchdog.

I use a free program called winpatrol (www.winpatrol.com) that warns when
anything tries to insert itself in the startup list. It allows you to deny
the insertion. That's how I found out that Quicktime tries to reinsert
itself in startup everytime you run the program - even if it was disabled
before. You don't have to specifically choose to run Quicktime for this to
happen. It can occur when you click on some links that use the Quicktime
format. Winpatrol takes care of Quicktime's "invasion" into my startup
list.
