For me, this IS a critical issues. How am I to work with such an awful
performance? Can't even use the by-word or by-letter for my presentation.

Patrick Schmid said:
Oh ok. This mean that it's a bug right? Hmmm, hope Microsoft gets someone to
fix it up asap.
This is not how Microsoft works. Immediate patches are only done for
critical issues, that means mainly security related ones.
I wouldn't be surprised if this won't be addressed until the first service
pack, which is several months (at best) away.

Found another problem. In PowerPoint 2003, I used to use the shadow tool for
my text (not the text shadow). The text shadow looked awful and that is the
reason I used the shadow tool.

I opened the presentation in PowerPoint 2007 and run it. During animation,
the shadow will appear at where the text should stop at after animation
while the text goes on with the animation. In another word, the shadow is
not moving. Well, to solve this, I'll have to remove the Shape shadow and
reapply the text shadow. But, just like PowerPoint 2003, it doesn't look
good.

Echo S

Repro steps? I know you applied the shadow tool shadow to some text in 2003.
Did you adjust the distance between the shadow and the object (which would
be the text, in this case). Also give us an example animation setting so we
can see what you mean.

PPT 2007's text shadows should look good. I wonder if you apply the shadows
to the text in 2007 if that makes a difference....

You may just have to forego the by-word and by-letter animations and effect
settings. (I'm sorry, but I personally don't think that's such a bad thing
because, although those can be effective at times, they're often very
annoying and overused. But I do understand where you're coming from -- I
have my own critical issues I would like to see fixed or improved.)

Neal and I have exchanged some files and info and arrived at a few tentative
conclusions:

- If I edit the equations in his files, the same thing happens; they shrink,
become distorted and useless, but this happens in both PPT 2007 RTM and in 2003.

- If I create a new presentation with an equation in it in either 2003 or 2007,
the same problem doesn't appear (here or on Neal's computer)

First tentative conclusion: The problem's with the files, not the Equation Editor
in 2007 RTM.

- Neal's files made a detour through Mac-land, having been opened and, IIRC,
edited on Mac PPT 2004. I don't have 2004 here, but I did create a new PPT with
an equation, opened and saved it from Mac PPT X. That one opened and allowed
editing w/o problems back on the PC. In PPT X, I get a Server Not Found error
when I try to EDIT the equations; I don't seem to have Equation Editor
installed/available, so no great surprise there. Whether or not it IS available
on Mac, I don't know.

But it seems that it may be, and that using it to edit PC-created equations is bad
for your sanity. And for your equations. Dr. Marco ... do you have Equation
Editor on your Mac? Want to have a go?

But the real killer here is that Equation Editor's now severely crippled in PPT
2007. Where in previous versions you could use Recolor Picture to change the text
in equations to some other color, the Recolor feature's gone from 2007 (well, it's
morphed into something totally different). You may now equations in Henry Ford
(any color as long as it's) Black. Or nothing.

The only workaround I could offer is limp and kinda pathetic: create the
equation, drag it off the slide, copy it, Edit, PasteSpecial, as EMF, ungroup it,
make color changes as needed. Delete EMF, go back to the original equation and
repeat every time the equation needs editing.

Or, I suppose, ban dark background slides. Feh.

Does anyone have a better idea for equations on dark b/g slides?

Does anyone have the full MathType product? Can it set colors for equation text,
or is it also strictly black on white?

I am using the RTM version and I am having horrible problems with equations
created originally using one of the Powerpoint versions in the 1990s. They
look cut off so that not all of the equation shows. When I double click to
edit I can see the equation is right. But then closing the equation editor
the equation box closes down to microscopic size and there is only a
fragment of the equation visible. I have tried to copy the equation and
paste, but that doesnt work either. Its a serious problem because I cannot
show any of my older presentations.

I found a workaround for this in an earlier beta version; it involves copying
the equation to the clipboard then pasting back in, I think it was, EMF format.
I don't remember the specific, but in the spirit of "Those who don't remember
the past are condemned to repeat it" I'd be happy to have another go at it if
you'd like to email me an example file. One or two slides is plenty; pop the
text from this message into the body of the email, attach the PPT and email to
steve at-sign pptools dot com
It seems to work with equations created in Powerpoint 2003, however.

Patrick Schmid said:

because it's integrated into Word and not a separate program like the
previous equation editor. Maybe the next version of PPT will get it? Of
course, you can make your equation in Word and paste it into PPT.
Which beta version are you using? The release version of PowerPoint 2007
does NOT have that problem with old equations anymore.

The biggest problem is that for some reason it does not use the new
equation
editor. Word 2007 includes it so it is strange that Powerpoint 2007 does
not. Even worse, equations created in older version of Powerpoint do not
work correctly. They have to be manually recreated.

Does anyone have any information on PPT2007? Pros & Cons. What are
some
of the neat new features? What was left out that should have been
included?

It seems to me that this is a convertion problem with PowerPoint 2007 from
PowerPoint 2003 as I tried to apply Shape Effect->Shadow on a text and
everything works out normally.

Anyone with PowerPoint 2003, please confirm the problem with the following
steps:
1) Open PowerPoint 2003
2) Type a single line text
3) Apply shadow from the Shadow Tool (not the text shadow on the toolbar)
4) Play around with the shadow (if possible make it broader)
5) Add animation to it. Try picking Spiral In.
6) Save
7) Open PowerPoint 2007
8) Load the presentation saved above
9) Try running the presentation.

What I get with the steps above is the shadow of the text is on the screen
(without text). When the text flies in, it will stop on the shadow. To
remove the shadow, just apply the Shape Effect->Shadow on the text. Readd
the shadow and everything goes on fine.

By the way, I do not have PowerPoint 2003 anymore but all my previous
PowerPoint 2003 presentations are using shadows as describe in step (3) and
when I open all of my presentations in PowerPoint 2007, I need to reapply
all the shadow for the texts.

Thanks.

Hello,

|
| I think it's probably got to do with the new text engine in PPT 2007.

You are correct. The OfficeArt text caching mechanism is "inefficient" when
by-letter or by-word animation effects are used.

Using a sprite-less animation effect (such as Appear) or simply not using
by letter or by word animation settings are the recommended workarounds.

Thanks,

I asked Steve to send me a file to work with. He sent a file with an
equation editor equation created in PPT 2003 -- I opened this in 2007 and
applied the "Apex" theme so I could see what was happening with the equation
text color.

Here's the workaround I figured out.

Selected the equation, Drawing Tools Format | Shape Styles dialog launcher
to get to Format Object dialog.

On Picture toolbar, change Image color to Black and White, change brightness
to 100%.

Now I got white text.

It's not as good as the old recolor, and I can only get white, but it's
better'n nuthin'.

Selecting "washout" will give you grey text. Change the contrast to get
different shades of grey.

Also, if I copy and paste special as PNG, I can go to Picture Tools Format |
Recolor and use the "light variations" to change the text to various theme
colors. Unfortunately, choosing "more variations" doesn't seem to do
anything, so you're really locked into using your theme colors here. (The
various Dark Variations don't seem to do anything, either.)

Same if I copy/paste as WMF or EMF. Bummer. I was hoping one of those would
let me specify what color the equation editor text would show up as. Ah,
well. At least we have a few options.

And Ned emailed me back to ask why PPT didn't get the same attention to tables
that Word did. Mumbling to myself that they were both the same EquationEditor
3 program and what was he talking about, I went off to have a look and ooeee.
They sure did revamp it in Word.

And if you create the equation there and hold your mouth just right, you can
select it and copy/paste into PPT.

It's here and "intuitive" is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyy over there.
Far from it.

Add the equation in Word.
Tripleclick within it to select the whole works, then press Ctrl+C
Switch to PPT and choose Edit, Paste Special
If you see nothing but "Unformatted text" on the list of choices, cancel, go
back to Word and repeat the tripleclick and copy drill. Put your tongue on the
other side of your mouth or something. It seems totally random whether it
works or not.
But if the moon's in the right phase and you've been a good little
PowerPointer, you'll see Microsoft Word Document Object on the list when you
Paste Special. Choose it and click OK.

That and a bit more info going up here shortly

Word has a brand-new built-in equation editor, so yes, that was revamped
in Word. With tables, I have to ask the same thing as Echo though.
However, note that Word didn't get the new OfficeArt completely that PPT

have the new WordArt, while Word still features the old WordArt...
