converting 2007 pptx into 2003 ppt without text changing to images

Due to the fact that default styles and master template in powerpoint2007 use
a lot of word art and text effects, when these are converted to ppt 2003
files the text is converted to images.

I have followed the help instructions on removing all the text effects, but
still everytime I try and save as 2003 it still converts the text to images.

Any idea why?

A note to microsoft - who's idea was it to make converting text to images
the default behaviour. This is an example of a really, really stupid product
feature which goes contrary to what any sensible person would want (i.e.
keeping the text editable across versions)

That'd depend on what the sensible person wants from the "backsaved" file.

I think the assumption at MS was that the file would be created and edited in
the new version and saved backwards only so that people using older versions
could view it. Under that assumption, it makes sense that they preserve the
visual fidelity of the presentation, even if it must be done at the expense of
editability.

One handy trick is to start a new presentation and immediately save in 97-2003
format to put the file in compatibility mode (and disable at least some features
that won't be backwards compatible).
