Power off on shut down

R

Roger Myles

When selecting shut down the sytems does not power down
after an orderly windows shutdown, and windows re boots. I
cannot manually overrride using the power off button.
I have been trying to solve this problem for 12 months
maybe longer.

I ma running Windows 2000 - with all SP updates installed
on a Dell Dimension XPS B600

After my latest attempts to investigate I am not even sure
that I have APM installed, and neither do I have ACPI

How can I

1. Determine if I have APM installed

2. If I do not have it installed - how do I install it.

3. Should I install ACPI - if yes - how do I install it.

I really would like to resolve this problem.

Thank you

Roger

I have a similar problem, though I can use the power off
button during the earliest part of booting. Microsoft
Knowledge Base article 285461 suggests a problem with
early versions of Adaptec EasyCD; I don't have this, but I
do have DirectCD, and the Roxio site seems to suggest
there may also be issues with this. However, DirectCD is
not listed on their downloads/upgrades, so this may lead
me nowhere.
I'm sorry, I can't answer your specific questions and
would like to know if they are relevant to me. Hope this
may be some slight help.

someone at microsoft's 800 # told me it had to do with a
driver not being digitally signed ...mine didn't start
until i installed my sympatico internet software/ethernet
hardware. my sympatico driver isn't digitally signed and
microsoft warning came up during install and asked if i
still wanted to install it., had to to run the hardware.
my computer never shuts down now .

When a driver is digitally signed it means it has been tested by
Microsoft. A driver that is not digitally signed my also work perfectly.
In your case though you know your problem didn't start until you
installed that driver. Then only thing you can do is update that driver
when there is a new version.
