Possible Disk Cleanup manager error

I am using Windows XP Home Edition with Athlon AMD Processor.

I have accessed te disc cleanup manager via the control panel and it appears
to be stuck on "compressing Old Files"
It does say in the disk cleanup window that this may take several minutes,
but has always been accomplished within a minute.
However, today I went to do the same thing and was 'compressing old files'
for over 45 minutes without the progress bar moving at all.
Is there anything that can be done to help resolve this problem?
I have tried a system restore to a previous date, but to no avail.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Line 48, Right column "Disk Cleanup - Compress..."
Save on Desktop.
Double click the icon once downloaded.
The icon can then be discarded.
