Disk Clean Hangs

When I start the disk cleanup utility it hangs up in the step indicating compressing old files. The task manager shows 98-99% CPU utlization and if I cancel the cleanup task the desktop window disappears but the cleanmgr.exe process still shows 99% cpu utilization in task manager. I've manually cleaned all the files I can ( temp internet, recycle bin, etc.) and have run chkdsk and Norton speedisk but nothing resolves this problem. I've booted the machine in safe mode but had the same results. The disk clean task still hangs ( looks like a loop from the cpu util ) and the only ways to end it is to terminate it through task manager or reboot the machine. I'm not getting any error msgs.

Any ideas ???

To those of you who replied to my inquiry thanks for all your help.

The fix for the registry on Kelly's site worked.

Nice work. Dell was basically stumped on this problem.
