Popups

Hope Im in the right section here.

Whenever I try to use the internet, I get pop ups one
after another, all with the heading ending Microsoft
Internet explorer. Half the time they are blank. They
stop my homepage opening and 9 times out of ten the comp
freezes. Its driving me crazy. Is there any way of
stopping these damn popups. Are they part of the
microsoft software?

Im running internet explorer 6, I have a firewall and a
pop up stopper, windows XP
