POP3 & Norton Internet Security

Nick Short

An unknown error has occurred. Account: 'Yahoo!', Server:
'pop.mail.yahoo.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 995, Secure(SSL): Yes, Error
Number: 0x80004005

I recently upgraded to latest level of Nortin Internet Security 2008 (when
they prompted me to!), and since then I cannot receive email via Windows Mail
from my Yahoo account. See error message above.

Just spoke to Symantec who claim that NIS 2008 is fully compatible with
Windows Mail. I'm not convinced as the problem only started with their
upgrade, and all was working perfectly before.

Can you help? Many thanks.

I'll bet it's Norton. What if you uninstall Norton as a test, including
running this utility?

Did Symantec happen to tell you whether NIS 2008's "anti-spam" add-on is
also fully compatible with Windows Mail? When I tried that add-on download
about a month ago, it was not, because it did not allow for the Windows Mail
"client integration' and therefore was a useless add-on feature.

I'll try this. Many thanks. Surely I cannot be the only person to have
this issue?

Didn't ask this specifically Jerry. My interaction with Symantec's online
chat help has been less than useful though. I spent three hours online with
them last night on a separate issue. My valid product key was not
recognized when I upgraded and they remotely uninstalled and re-installed the
utility three times without getting anywhere. Their initial fix was then to
offer me a full refund! I eventually (after a mere four hours online by
then) persuaded them to give me a new product key.

Life shouldn't be this difficult.

About a dozen people a day come here with problems caused by
either Norton, McAfee, or Trend antivirus programs. Those
companies seem more interested in getting your money than
fixing the problems they cause in Windows Mail, and often pay
PC makers to include trial versions of their programs with new
PCs. Many PC makers seem more interested in getting the money
than having their machines work all the time.

Hi again -- well I tried uninstalling and reinstalling NIS 2008. Problem
persisted. So I uninstalled and then installed Spyware Doctor. Still got
the same Windows Mail problem. I am now very confused. Any further
thoughts?

Thanks!

If the problem started when you installed NIS 2008, reinstalling it was
probably a mistake. Try uninstalling it, then running this utility, and
not reinstalling NIS 2008:

<http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039>

You may also have to remove your email account under Windows
Mail, then restart Windows Mail and add the account again.

If you have installed the Google Toolbar, uninstall that as well.

If this cures your problem, you may want a replacement antivirus
program that doesn't cause problems in Windows Mail.
I recommend either avast! or AVG, either one with a custom
install that tells it to leave out the part that scans email.

http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/us/frt/0?prd=aff

If you're worried about leaving out email scanning, see here
where Symantec, which puts out the Norton line of antivirus
programs, admits that it is unnecessary:

<http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...88256c7500723cf0?OpenDocument&src=bar_sch_nam>

If Spyware Doctor supports email scanning, it may be necessary to
turn it off in that program as well.

If there's a message you can't move to another folder or delete, you
may need to download and install this hotfix, with Windows Mail not
running:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/941090

Although it's labelled as for messages stuck in the Outbox, it also works in
other folders. If you don't know whether you have a 32-bit version of Vista
or a 64-bit version, try the hotfix for the 32-bit version first.

I never suggested reinstalling. Uninstall, run the uninstall utility and
install Avast!. It's free for home use (www.avast.com).

Thanks again Frank. I did also uninstall NIS 2008 by utilizing the Norton
uninstall utility and simply tried to use Windows Mail as you suggested.
Still got the same error message though. It seems that whatever happened to
my laptop when I upgraded to NIS 2008 remains even when NIS 2008 is fully
uninstalled. Same problem when I installed Spyware Doctor too.

I do have a solution though, but you won't like it (neither do I truth be
told, but it works). I reinstalled NIS 2008 and at the same time have
stopped forwarding my POP3 Yahoo! mail to Windows Mail. Instead I
downloaded Mozilla Thunderbird and started forwarding my POP3 Yahoo! mail to
that email client. Guess what? Works perfectly, even with NIS 2008
installed.

Weird world ...
