Plu and Play Device Problems

XP Home SP2

Having an issue installing Plug and Play devices; (Started with plugging in
a common USB flash drive ... XP listed it as an unknown device)

XP basically reports it cannot locate drivers even when tell it to look on
the XP HOME installation CD (SP1) or the internet

As a standard troubleshooting technique I decided to uninstall the USB
devices and let XP repair itself

Uninstalled All USB Controllers and Hubs ... rebooted but XP could not find
any of the drivers. To recover I had to manually tell XP where to find the
drivers which were still on the machine for each of the 4 controllers and 3
hubs

Any ideas would be welcome ... either this is a rare occurance or I just am
not asking the question correctly because I cannot find anything regarding
this normally automated function

You only need to post the issue once, folks will get the message.Either way,
have you installed the boards chipset drivers from the mfg...The software
includes the drivers for USB,controllers,etc.....If its an intel based
board,go
to http://www.intel.com Select downloads/chipset software Make sure you
download the utility based on youre boards chipset, the latest release may not
cover older boards.

Thanks Andrew

.... the multiple post was becuase OE is complaining about not having MAPI
available ... sorry I figured the error meant the posting was not sent so
kept making changes and trying to send again ...

as for the drivers they are already on the machine ... XP just appears to
have amnesia as it doesn't know where to look for the existing drivers

my hunch is this machine has lost a registry, ini or other setting that
should point it to the inf folder in windows ... just not sure where this
would be.
