USB devices not recognized

Hi all.

XP Pro does not recognize USB devices. In the past it did, now it
does not. I've tried different devices on different ports, and XP
never gets to the "Found New Hardware"stage. It just sits there
looking at me. I've removed all controllers and hubs in Device
Manager, rebooted, and let XP reinstall the drivers, with no change.
I've reinstalled SP1a, with no change.

Puzzling.

Thanks,
Rick

Time for a good old reformat and start over for XP :)

Not a bad thing its good to do this every year or so gets rid of all
the crap.

Just make sure you back everything up, backup and sleep on it and the
next do back sommore stuff you forgot then reformat you always forget
somthing so give your brain time to think of them, sleep on it.

Bye.

It may be a hardware issue also... Reformat could have the same result.. Try
installing a USB PCI card if that is feesable....If it still does it, You
know it is software.....also, i don't know if you have spare parts or if you
are a Techie, but try another Hard drive first and load an O.S. on it and if
the USB works, you know it is software.

I get the same thing with my new PCI, USB controller card. It's a pain! I'll let you know what I find out.

I do have to admit that my newest installation of XP Pro does recognize a USB device. Unlike the WIN98SE that I just changed from, I have to have the USB device connected before I boot or reboot my machine. With WIN98SE I could plug my USB Pen Memory, 128MB, into my running computer and up pops the drive. With WIN XP I can't do that. It locks up as soon as I plug in the USB device. I have my USB wireless mouse working also

If and when you get your computer to recognize the USB device let me know if you can plug a USB device into it while it is running

Have a great day.

Check out this site 822603 - Availability of the Windows XP SP1 USB 1.1 and 2.0 Update, http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=822603 Microsoft has released an update for the USB drivers included in Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1) that addresses the following issues: Power Management You may not be able to use your USB mouse (or wake your computer with the USB mouse) after you..

My computer would lock up using XP Pro with SP1. I downloaded this and all is good

Good Luck
