Please help- XP crashing/restarting -

U

Uncle Vinnie

Can someone please tell me where I can start looking into a problem that has
just started...

Using XP Home, I've used eTrust EZ Antivirus for years, no problem.. now I
cannot to a complete scan without it crashing at the end, into a restart
(not even BSOD). I
have tried in Safe Mode as well. I have used both an older an newest
version, same- it crashes. I've run msconfig, disabled just about
everything there, no luck. I have done an online scan, no virus found.

Is there somewhere I can find what is crashing and why- Windows advises a
driver issue, but that is a vague answer.

Is there a log, or a really good online scanner I can try (I did use
TrendMicro), or, where can I find the old Scandisk... since when it crashed
in safe mode, it came up with a DOS screen, hard drive error/ F10...

Thank you... I have a feeling this is not due to the AV, but something
beyond that...

Hey there Vinnie,

You can find the error by viewing the event logs on the PC by right clicking
on the My Computer Icon, and the left clicking on Manage..., click on the
plus sign next to Event Viewer, and the click on the Application and System
logs to review any errors or warnings that occured before the restart.

After you find an error, double click on it and then take note of the Source
Name and the EventID. Then go to the TechNet Events and Errors Message
Center for Windows XP here:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/su...ows Operating System&MajorMinor=5.1&LCID=1033

Enter the Source Name and Event ID Into the fields and it will pull any
possible breaks/fixes and all releated KB articles for you to read.

Let me know how it goes!

William- Thank YOU!

First, I delved off as you told me- right into uncharted territory- I did
find a few issues relating to acpi and PCtel, which I'll work on later
on...

Here's what I found regarding the scans: It was the CD drive all along! I
like to keep Microsoft Bookshelf in the top CD drive.. when EZ was done
scanning my HD, it then went to scan my CD and. oddly, claims it was unable
to read the disk... simply removing the disk fixed the problem! Scan
completed, no virus!

When I did the online scan, I only selected it to check my 'C:' drive.

All's set.. thanks for the tip... now I know where to look if I get any
future errors!

Season's Greetings!

Regards.

By the way, I forgot to mention it was an ATAPI error- once I saw that, I
realized... the disk!
