Playing moviemaker movie through sony dvd player

My D.V.D player will not play my moviemaker movie which i have copied to cd
using the process in moviemaker. I tried to burn it to cd using Nero but it
will not copy themovie,it says it needs mpeg or avi files. If I buy a dvd
writer will it solve the problem or is it because the dvd player won't read
moviemaker files?

I went to papajohn and learned to save as avi, convert to mpeg,and then use
nero to burn to cd.No need for dvd burner.
