Player Within Movie Maker Does Not Work

This is a weird one. Or maybe it's not...I don't know.

Okay, some time ago, for no apparent reason, the player inside Movie Maker
stopped working. It literally will not do anything. Sometimes it sort of
flashes a bit if that makes any sense (not the area where the video would
play but the words, etc). This obviously makes the program useless.

I tried several things to fix it, and nothing worked. I cannot remember
everything I did because it's been so long ago. Wish I could tell you but I
can't. Finally gave up.

Then another weird thing. About a year ago I purchased a laptop with XP pro
on it. Windows Movie Maker won't work on it, either! Very strange. It does
the same thing..the player within the program will not work.

The laptop is strictly business. The only software the two computers share
would be FireFox, IE and the basic stuff that comes with XP, Open Office, and
I believe that's all.

Today I tried downloading WMM 2.0 from CNET, and installed it only to find
no improvement. And it appears installing it removed 2.1 as well.

When it comes to "real movies", I go to my friend's place who has all the
latest stuff on Mac. I just want to use WMM to slice and dice MPEGs and AVIs
I find on the net, that's all. I did it for years with no problem.

It should be worth noting that WMM never worked on the laptop, even when it
was fresh out of the box. I find it strange that they exhibit the same
problem.

Hi,

I am new to this newsgroup stuff, so I'm not sure if I am following protocol
or not...sorry, if I'm not. Did you ever get any response to you inquiry or
resolve the problem. I have the same thing happening where my player inside
movie maker stopped working. I used MM extensively for a big project I was
working on with no problems at all. I just went back into MM last week and
all of a sudden it's not working. I too have tried several fixes but have
not resolved the issue.

Any advice?
Thanks!

I wish I could help you, but no one has responded and I'm at a loss
concerning what to do about it. If you come up with a solution, let me know.

Good luck!

Protocol would be to begin a new thread
when you have a question. Including as many
details as possible will usually help. It's
also useful to know what version of Windows
you are running.

First I would suggest that you do a system
restore to a time before you installed Movie
Maker 2.0. Hopefully this will revert you to
Movie Maker 2.1.

(306084) HOW TO: Restore the Operating
System to a Previous State in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=306084

Next, try reducing your Graphics Hardware
Acceleration as per the instructions in
the following article...if an improvement
is realized...you need to update your video
driver.

(272193) PI: How to Troubleshoot
Graphics Issues
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=272193
(scroll down to:
Microsoft Windows 2000 and Windows XP)

If you need to update your video driver...
the following steps may help you:

Go to the support website of your video
adapter's mfg. and search for Windows
XP Compatible drivers.

If you don't know the make and model of
your video adapter...check the documentation
that came with the computer.

Also you could try these steps...
Go to...Start / Run...type...
msinfo32 ...press enter.

On the System Information screen...choose...
Components / Display...

You should find the make and model of your
display adapter as well as the driver version.

If the driver on the support website is more
current than the one you are running...
download it and install it. Also you should find
and follow the installation instructions at the
support site.

Once the driver is updated...return your acceleration
to Full.

Here's another possible:

From: Rehan
Movie Maker 2.1...
Audio but no Video...

It may be because the DV codec in your
system has gone astray...

Execute the following batch file to fix it:
