[PL] 2004 New Nominations

R

Randy Bard

Nominations are now open for the the 2004 Pricelessware list.

I would like to nominate SpywareGuard.

Category - Security: Anti-Spyware Tool

SpywareGuard provides a real-time protection solution against spyware
that is a great addition to SpywareBlaster's protection method.
An anti-virus program scans files before you open them and prevents
execution if a virus is detected - SpywareGuard does the same thing,
but for spyware! And you can easily have an anti-virus program running
alongside SpywareGuard.
SpywareGuard now also features Download Protection and Browser
Hijacking Protection!
SpywareGuard is compatible with: Windows 98, ME, 2000, XP
SpywareGuard is freeware / donationware.

Program name: nPOP
Category: Email Checker
Sub-category: Email Client
Freewware

Web Site: http://www.nakka.com/soft/npop/index_eng.html

From web site:

Introduction

This software allows you to access e-mail on a POP3 mail server on your
Pocket PC or PC. It provides the function of common remote e-mail access.

The mail displayed by nPOP is only the mail on the present on the server.
Therefore, if mail is deleted from your server it will disappear from a
list, even if the mail is displayed in the list.

When you connect using nPOP, the mail is listed and you can see the
header only. From that list you can select e-mail you want to receive on
your Pocket PC or PC. This is more efficient than downloading all the e-
mail on your Pocket PC or PC.

It can be use for management of the mail on a server etc. as a method to
check for the arrival of new e-mail. It is convenient, for people that
switch machines often since you can put your information on one floppy
disk where all the processing can be performed. (Win32)
Features

* Receive E-Mail (POP3 and APOP)
* Send Mail (SMTP and SMTP-AUTH and POP before SMTP)
* User specified ports for POP3 and SMTP
* Multi-account support (round reception is possible)
* Automatic check for new mail
* Mail is saved in a message box.
* A thread display of the mail list
* Support for attachments when sending and receiving e-mail (RFC
2231)
* Filters for Routing Received E-Mail
* Simple address book
* Dial-up management

Program name: Oubliette
Category: Security
Sub-category: Password Manager
Freeware: Open Source

Web Site: http://www.tranglos.com/free/oubliette_main.html

From Web Site:

Introduction to Oubliette

Yes, there are many freeware and shareware password databases around...
and this is one of them. I wrote it for the same old reason and I wrote
all the other programs here: the available applications, though some are
very fine, did not do quite what I needed. There was always a feature
missing or an interface quirk. So here is Oubliette, more functional,
easier to use and no less secure than any competing products. I hope
you'll enjoy using it.

It will store a list of accounts with information such as account name,
associated password, URL, and free-form notes. You can easily access the
information, copy to clipboard or export to a variety of formats. There
is a powerful search facility with filtered output (i.e. view only the
records that satisfy your search criteria). You can also filter by
categories that you assign to accounts when you create or edit them.
Oubliette offers a number of ways to transfer account names and passwords
to the browser: via the clipboard, through drag-and-drop, or by automated
form filling.

Now you can share your baby’s gurgling sounds with loved ones
thousands of miles away, via e-mail. You can send a voice greeting or
message to a friend or business associate halfway around the world,
over the Internet. In fact, you can share your voice with anyone in
the world who has an e-mail account, access to the Internet, and a
computer running Windows or Macintosh.*
Slow typists have been waiting a long time for the ability to record
and send voice messages over e-mail. And if you want to send a
message in a language other than the one you can type on your
computer, QUALCOMM’s PureVoice offers a fast and easy solution.

QUALCOMM’s PureVoice™ Player-Recorder lets you record and send voice
messages with your e-mail, and lets your recipients play back your
voice-mail messages on their Windows or Macintosh computer with the
click of a mouse.

PureVoice runs on your Windows, Macintosh, or Solaris machine and
features an easy-to-use onscreen VCR-like instrument panel.
Voice messages you compose with PureVoice have extremely high sound
quality — very nearly as high as you would experience in a local
phone call made over a good-quality home telephone. Yet the voice
messages take up very little space on your computer, and travel very
fast over e-mail. You send a voice message by attaching it to an e-
mail message using your existing e-mail software — in most cases,
this is achieved at the touch of a button in PureVoice! You can also
include text in the e-mail message, and attach other files such as
graphics and documents. QUALCOMM’s PureVoice is compatible with most
e-mail systems, including QUALCOMM’s own Eudora Pro and Eudora Light.

The average computer user comfortably speaks at a rate 10 times
faster than he or she can type. There is no need to spell-check a
voice message. Voice mail avoids the misinterpretation of moods
common in typed e-mail: with voice messages, your recipients don’t
have to guess when you’re being wry, funny, or serious. And on the
pocketbook side, you can send voice messages without incurring any
additional long-distance telephone charges!
In an age in which computers are thought to keep us apart, QUALCOMM’s
PureVoice Player-Recorder brings us closer together, adding a human
touch to communication.

* In order for you to record a voice message using QUALCOMM’s
PureVoice, you must be using a PC running a 32-bit version of the
Windows operating system (Windows 95, 98 or Windows NT), or you must
be using a Macintosh PowerPC model or 68K Macintosh with 68020 or
better processor. You must also have a sound card with speakers and
a microphone. For your recipients to play your messages, they must
have the PureVoice Player-Recorder installed on their 32-bit Windows
95/98/NT machine or their Macintosh PowerPC or 68K Mac, with a sound
card and speakers. Additionally, if they wish to record a response,
they must have a microphone.

Program Name - QuickSliver .9b20.11.4
Catagory - Email
Sub Catagory - Anonymous Remailer Client
Homepage - http://www.quicksilvermail.net
Operating Systems - Win95/98/2K
Size - 1.43mb
Wate Type - Freeware
Download URL - ftp://ftp.skuz.net/pub/potato/setup_reli105.exe

QuickSilver is PRIVACY software. It can give you complete privacy in
your email and newsgroup postings. Why would this be of interest to
you?

Do you have fears that taking part in newsgroup discussions could
lead to your harrassment or stalking by some internet kook? Using
QuickSilver you can post articles with absolutely no traces of their
true origin. Your privacy is effectively bullet-proof.

In another scenario, you are 1 of several individuals under
surveillance. Your government believes you are involved in subversive
activies. Using QuickSilver all individuals can communicate freely.
Observers will find they can neither read this mail nor trace it to
its destination--even after tracing dozens of messages. Surveillance
of the message recipient's connections will reveal only the receipt
of a message. Its origin cannot be determined nor its content.

Suppose you work for an organization that is involved in criminal
activity. You believe you must inform the proper authorities
regarding the activities. To 'go public' with this information would
not only affect your employment adversly, it could indeed be life
threatening. A QuickSilver message cannot be traced to you.

QuickSilver provides this magic through a kind of identity
laundering. Using a special high secuirity protocol, called
'mixmaster', your outgoing message will be multi-encrypted and sent
through a series of remailers. These are available around the world.
Today some 45 or more remailers exist. Each server has a single
purpose, That is, to accept your message, strip away all traces of
origin--substituting its own--and send it on to either another
remailer or the final recipient. It is this process
(encrypting+remailing) that makes your mail untraceable and
unreadable to all but the intended recipient.
