[PL] 2004 Discussion - Program Descriptions

S

Susan Bugher

This thread is to discuss program descriptions.

At last count there were over 500 programs on the nominations page.

Last year a few brave, hearty, noble etc etc. :) volunteers gathered the
information needed for the PL2003 web pages. This year we are trying to
distribute the work load more evenly.

Last year the other volunteers and I communicated off-list when there
were questions about description preparation. This year I hope this
thread will serve a similar purpose.

There are quite a few items of information in a program description.
They are there because people have asked that they be included. If you
are unsure about *what* is needed or *why* the information is useful
please ask.

<climbing on soapbox> ;)

If you did not post a complete description when you nominated a program,
please make sure the description *is* complete and accurate and final
before making a second post. Please edit and format the description
before posting it. Ask for help if you need it.

I would like to be able to cut and paste your info into the database
table. (note: The HTML formatting is a separate operation). If you
furnish the description *exactly* as it should appear on the web page my
job will be easier.

There are many of you - there is only one of me. . .

</soapbox>

Below is a list of the items needed for the description - in the order
that they are shown on the web page -followed by some notes. I hope this
will be helpful.

PROGRAM NAME: IEradicator Category: Utilities
ware information: (Lite)

OS: Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows
Millennium and Windows 2000(sr1)

(language(s)): (8 Languages: French, German, Italian, Spanish, Korean,
Japanese, Chinese, Portuguese)

DESCRIPTION: Removes Internet Explorer versions 3 through 6.0

NOTES: Date: 2000-04 Version 3.1 Size 18 kb

COMMENTS: If you are sick and tired of all the Microsoft Security fixes
and still have holes that haven't been found "yet". Then this the tool
for you. Easy to use and small, Eradicator2001 will do all the work you
need to do the job.

Author: Unknown

Company: LitePC Technologies Pty Ltd

link 1 description: IEradicator is a tiny, script that uses the Windows
setup engine to surgically remove Internet Explorer versions 3 through
6.0 from Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows
Millennium and Windows 2000(sr1).

If you are one of the 70+% for which IE is the browser that floats your
boat you can reinstall the version you prefer. If not, then you can
bask in the inner glow of knowing you just secured your PC from all
known and unknown, past and future, IE security bugs while claiming
back 30+MB of closet space. Isn't it nice to have the choice?
\link 1: http://www.litepc.com/ieradicator.html

link 2 description: IEradicator is a tiny, 50K ASCII script that
removes Internet Explorer, either because you don't want it or because
you want a clean basis for an upgrade. It is NOT a complete removal,
however, as they say in the manual - "The removal process eliminates
99% of Internet Explorer's files and registry keys to clear
approximately 30MB of disk space. The remaining 1% is left behind to
maintain compatibility with programs that use the MS HTML layout engine
(e.g. Outlook Express)... After an IEradicator removal you have a clean
foundation onto which you can install a more recent version of IE and
the result is likely to be a smoother install and more stable final
product when compared to an upgrade installation.... Severe problems
and Operating system Crashes can be solved by removing IE with
IEradicator and then reinstalling IE again (if that's your choice) from
the source files."

Yes, please, a question. I'm sorry I didn't see this thread earlier, and I
posted a separate question about the process. (Actually, this thread just
now appeared in OE :)

I use and am interested in BNR. I see that there is a description on the
PL2004 page, the same description that was on the Pricelessware 2003 page.
I don't think the description is really adequate, but mostly I'm concerned
that the description only lists various versions of Windows. BNR is
available for both Windows and for Linux.

As I noted in my other post, this might be of interest to those, like me,
who plan to migrate from Windows to Linux, however slowly.

Have I found the right thread? Should I do anything else?

Thanks,

Andy

Correction on ware-type for

PTBSync : Donationware

It doesn't say anywhere on the website, but in the helpfile:

"Although I have been working for some years in my spare
time developing this program, I don't want money for it.
Donationware means, that when you use PTBSync, you are
willing to donate money to a non-profit organization. In
our world, which is increasingly dominated by egoism and
profit taking, there are still people, who are willing to
stand up for protection of the environment, human rights, etc..."

IE 5 Web Accessories - Quick Search
http://www.pricelessware.org/2004/PL2004INTERNET.htm#I110

The above two programs are carryover nominations from PL2003. Both have
been seconded for PL2004. Quick Search is included in Web Accessories
for Internet Explorer 5. If there are no objections I would like to
remove the Quick Folders entry - since it is a duplication.

I believe an IE 6 Web Accessories utility is also available. Should that
be included in the IE 5 Web Accessories nomination as:

IE 5 Web Accessories, IE 6 Web Accessories

Comments please.

Graph Paper Printer (Liteware)

An earlier unlimited version is also available. There was some
discussion in ACF earlier this year. I *think* the last unlimited
freeware version is 4.21

http://fwg.raum108.de/files/gpaper421.zip

Which version is preferred (or should we show two versions)? Comments

I vote v1.5b3, based on the multi-account support
A version diff referenced today by the Italian Mole in message
<[email protected]>

Seems to me that use of 1.50b3, a beta version, is coming too close to
"warez" for Pricelessware. I vote for inclusion of the previously
listed unrestricted version, 1.48, and for the newly released liteware
version 1.56 (see thread posted today.

Does 1.56 support downloading only on one account? If so it would be
reasonable to call it crippleware. Most people have more than one email
account probably.

Here's a recap of what I found about the nominated programs that lacked a
"ware type". I thought it would be better to place it here in the
"Description" thread.

NB! This is what the authors or likewise has said on their webpages about
their programs.

I have excluded the programs that don't seem to explicitly state anything on
their websites, but I have included a comment on those where the websites
seem to be gone.

---------------------------------------------------
1-4a Rename : Freeware.
4t Tray Minimizer : Liteware. (Crippleware)

4t Tray Minimizer stores some options, i.e. Favorites, only for the current
session in the free version. However, that's what the website says. If
that's not a necessary option, you may well call it "liteware" instead of
"crippleware".
ClickTray Calendar : Freeware
DBackup : Freeware
DirGraph : Freeware

Link to DirGraph v.2.0 http://www.spillett.net/~dirgraph/
DubIt : Freeware
Dup Detector : Freeware
eags on! : (404 on webpage)
Easy MD5 Creator : Freeware.
Easy SFV Creator : Freeware.
EF Commander : Liteware

Correct name should be "EF Commander Free", "EF Commander" is shareware.
Explore2fs : Freeware.
GrabIt : Freeware.
GSpot : Freeware.
iDailyDiary : Freeware.
ieSpell : Freeware (for non-commercial use only)
LaunchMate : Freeware
Media Player Classic : Freeware (Open Source GPL)
MesNews : Freeware
Monitor Off : Freeware
Mozilla Calendar : Freeware (Open Source)

Note: *All* "Mozilla" entries on the nominationlist at this moment are
Freeware with Open Source.
MsDVR 2000 : Freeware
NgDiskCat : Freeware
Octopus : Freeware (according to BlueChillies)

Note about Octopus:

404 on download link: http://members.xoom.com/Moskalyuk/Octopus

I found another download link at:
http://www.karaokesoft.narod.ru/utility/octopus.zip
onlineTV : Adware!

onlineTV requires both RealPlayer and Windows MediaPlayer.
(should possibly be removed from nominationlist?)
Oubliette : Freeware (Open Source)
Pablo Commander : Freeware (for non-commercial use)
Pan : Freeware (Open Source)
(prerequisite: GTK for Windows)

QuickPar : Freeware
RoundAbout PMO (was Phoenix Mail) : Freeware (Open Source)

Actually the name seems to be only "RoundAbout"

To make things clear(?), RoundAbout is "based" on "Phoenix Mail"
(abbreviated PMO or phxmail), but that program in itself still exists and is
still developed further in another track at SourceForge!

I use 4.6.8, just cause I like it best. I believe the last version

Spacey

Same here, but even 4.6.8 causes annoyance with frequent popups urging
upgrades. As useful as this program is, it should probably be
categorized as nagware.

I've unchecked "check for new versions" in the "Other" tab. Do you have
this option? Spacey
