Hi Karen,

Bjorn found a site that *lists* Octopus - so we now have a complete
description - the bad news is that the download link doesn't work. Could
you please post the file name so I can look for other DL locations. Also
- someone in ACF might be willing to host the program *if*
redistribution is allowed - so if you have that info send it along too.

TIA

Susan

Winsite was the download link I found. This is where I'd listed the Octopus
related URLS: <[email protected]>

http://www.winsite.com/bin/Info?2492
http://dl.winsite.com/files/95/ar2/win95/netutil/octopus.zip

It's a setup.exe. I better guinea pig it first, since there was some
early incarnation of this program that was adware.

.. . .

(Leaving the below quoted in case someone wants to go hunting for a
better link than Winsite)

I don't envy you in your effort to keep track of all the threads... :)

Anyway, when I searched for ware-type for Octopus, I stumbled across a
working download link at:

http://www.karaokesoft.narod.ru/utility/octopus.zip

However, it's *painfully* slow, so I'm downloading it now and will put it up
somewhere else...

In the readme, I see no redistribution restrictions. If we have trouble
finding a download site, and someone as well offer to host, I could zip
this up and upload. It's just an exe, a hlp, and a readme. (I don't know
who might volunteer to host though; and, if it matters, highly doubt this
one will win its way to PL.)

Ahh! Forget about the download link I provided. WinSite is *much* faster
than narod.ru...

Hopefully you'll see my later followup - where I discovered I blew it
(sorry). The winsite link is to the v3.1 adware one.

The narod.ru, hopefully that's to the clean 3.11 version.

archive it. No worries mate :) (my aussie accent)

I found one!

Now I'll look into it to see that it has nothing evil hidden...

The companion readme.txt to this at least says that the Adware part is
removed...

That sounds encouraging! It's 3.11 we want, which is distributed no-install,
as just a zip of the few files, ready to launch. No nasty setup.exe hiding
Aureate diseases.

This one is the 3.11 version, adware-free:

http://www.powerpc.home.ro/download/octopus.zip

I scanned it with both Ad-Aware and Spybot with no complaints!

I even installed it, and it worked as intended.

Since I constantly reorganize my webspaces, I think it's better if someone
else can provide space for it, so it can have a durable address.

Congrats! Challenging search -- completed with success.

I wonder if that URL might suffice for purpose of its being in the
nominations list? Were it to make it to PL status, burnr said a bit
ago that he'd host it. <[email protected]>

Aside from the PL context, it seems to me that one of the rareware
protectors might want to provide shelter, before it becomes entirely
extinct from the face of the web.

It looks like a decent place, but considering that the author's pages has
disappeared, one cannot know.

In any case, I have a copy on my machine in case the Romanian link
disappears as well...

Considering the constant change of the face of Internet, it would be a great
service to the Pricelessware if someone could put up the space for all
freeware that is authorized for redistribution. This would minimize the need
for updating the pages during the year.

I've stumbled upon <ftp://ftp.freenet.de> which gives me the impression
of being a very solid archive (it's fairly large, a mirror for some major
collections). I've found that its win software directories include Octopus,
so these links might hold as a good backup.

That ends my web travels for the day. I got tired out just merely by
/watching/ you work, on the problemware the past two days. :)

That would be a good improvement, yes. I hope that the idea might travel
its way to the consciousness of the possible volunteers.

Even if a constant download link was provided the version information
would have to be updated in the Pricelessware description and most
updating is for version changes. :(

It is a *great* help to have dependable links for hard to find and *last
available version* downloads. We are quite well served in that
department - I'm afraid to make a list for fear I'll leave someone out -
but kudos to all of you. :)

Now if we could only find a few mind-readers to tell us when a program
is *about* to disappear or become a limited version . . .

I have been using Octopus 3.11 on my machine for almost three years
and I am yet to lose a file - I stop downloading big files and resume
a few times.

The only drawbacks to this tiny but efficient freeware downloader are:

1) It catches everything that is put on the clipboard and the download
dialog pops up and it is quite a pain to cancel it. (It is not
elective about zip, exe extensions and the like)

2) You cannot depend upon it to keep a record of the downloads because
once in a while the ini file gets corrupted.

I wrote to the author to add a filter and also incorporate capability
to keep a log but he said he has no time and has stopped development
altogether.
