Ping: John Fitzsimons - Pricelessware file

I didn't see a response to my earlier post - wondering if you missed it
.. . .

I uploaded a tab delimited file with all the PL2003 programs - it can be
saved/downloaded here (293,478 bytes):

http://www.pricelessware.org/2003/0829PL2003.TXT

Anyone who wants a copy - grab it now - I'll probably delete the file
from the server fairly soon (it's already a tiny bit outdated).

A spreadsheet program should open this file or open it in a text editor,
copy and paste it into a spreadsheet.

Programs are in alphabetical order - except the removed ones - which are
at the bottom. I changed most of the HTML escape characters back to text
- may have missed a few . . .

FWIW - I tried copying the file to the clipboard and importing it into
DBedit via the clipboard - that *almost* worked - I think some of the
info in the description column was truncated (when the entry was very
long).

Okay, that's a better size than the 4MB ? you mentioned earlier.
Surely it wouldn't be much bigger as an xls file ? Wasn't I getting
involved in order to help you shrink it ? If so it looks like you have
done that already.

Yes, but as the column width in programs like Lotus are no wider than
240 characters (display) one cannot fully see every column.

As it is it didn't import properly. Added to that I cannot remember
now what we were trying to achieve. Wasn't it a spreadsheet version
of the PL list ? All 13 categories or just the alphabetical ?

IMO saving the original xls sheet should have been quicker/easier/
better.

The problem is probably the same as mentioned above. Even though
something like Lotus only displays the 240 characters apparently they
are still all imported correctly. This may also apply to DBedit.

Regards, John.

I'm beginning to suspect we have a great failure to communicate here. I
thought you requested the file - that's why I created it.

If you select a cell and then change to the edit mode you should see all
the contents of the cell in the editing box.

I thought you had *requested* a *copy* of the spreadsheet version of the
PL. That's what I created. The tab delimited file contains all the data
for the Pricelessware programs. The file is in alphabetical order but
after you import it into a spreadsheet you can sort it by category,
subcategory, revision date, etc. etc. etc.
IMO saving the original xls sheet should have been quicker/easier/
better.

There *is* no xls sheet - original or otherwiae - there never has been.

No - DBedit *truncated* some of the cell entries. QuattroPro limits the
number of characters in a single cell - evidently DBedit does too - and
the limitation in DBedit is more severe.

Well two things. I am pretty sure that I got the impression that the
original source was a spreadsheet. Secondly, assuming that was
correct, I thought it would be handy for anyone to download it. Not
just me.

Thanks. That was my recommendation. It doesn't seem to work very
well in Lotus so I will try Excel when I get a bit of spare time.
Thanks for your work. :)

Your impression is correct. The original is a (multipage) spreadsheet -
and I also thought other people might want a copy.

Have you tried opening the file in a text editor - and then copying and
pasting the contents into a lotus spreadsheet?

It seems to me that *should* work . . .

but one never knows . . . :)

I don't know about Lotus, but I tried copy/paste to Word... :( ..the did
the same with Excel.
After c-p all, I then went to the top and did auto format each
column...individually..
that worked the best.

Yes, it's pretty ugly looking viewed as a text document. :)

Why did you auto format the columns in Excel - was there some sort of
problem?
