ping and ftp disappear

I discovered things in my registry that I wished
to delete. They were the titles of news group
articles that I had save to my desktop. (And just
when I was thinking that Webroot Window Washer was
covering my back).

So I used regedit -> export the whole registry
and then I was surprised at the size of my saved
registry file.

45 megabytes

I started searching for a registry cleaner. My
first choice was the kiss of death but I did not
know if for a day or so. I selected Microsoft
regclean.exe. It was free and available. But I did
not find out till too late that it was not
approved for use with Windows XP. I was not aware
what I had done to my registry, but I re-ran
the full export.

67 megabytes

To make matters worse, I ran "registry mechanic"
and then "registry fix". I think "registry fix"
might have done something, since an export of the
registry was now only 60 megabytes.

At this point, ping and ftp were GONE!

I can learn to live with a 60MB registry. Just give
me back my ping and my ftp. I did a refresh
(or re-install) of Windows XP Home (from CDROM).
After the re-install finished, ping and ftp are
still missing and the registry is still 60MB.

QUESTIONS

(1) If ping and ftp were installed (freeware,
shareware, vendor, commercial) software, it could
be un-installed and re-installed. Is it possible
to edit the registry and effect a "removal"?

(2) I can ping 192.168.1.1 but not any other
address. Not even my own gateway 192.168.1.1).
Is it possible that my firewall is blocking ping?

Thanks,
Charles

You are your own worst enemy.

What possible harm could come from having references to "titles of news group articles that I had save to my desktop" in your registry? Nothing.

I don't know about you, but my hard disk is 120GB. What the heck do I care if my registry is 45MB? And how do you know that's an excessive size?

You used RegClean 4.1a without first determining whether it was compatible with Windows XP?

Then you used registry cleaners - totally unnecessary toys that accomplish virtually nothing of value.

Use System Restore to restore your system to the most recent restore point, and hope that solves your problems. Otherwise you may have to reinstall XP. Going forward, learn to RTFM before you go messing around with things you don't understand.

maybe your gateway or the windows firewall is blocking ping. Try ping
www.google.com

If you get a response then I think it indicates that ping works and
your gateway or windows firewall or both are blocking echo requests /
ping requests.
*Look* in the windows firewall options. *Look* in the gateway's built
in firewall options.

I doubt you used the FTP command. You probably used some 3rd party
software. Reinstall the software.

If you're concerned abotu Win XP, then do a "Win XP Repair".
