Photos won't rotate

After many months of successful use, Windows now does not respond when I right-click and try to rotate a photo.

how are the rotate and resize options added to the right click menu? i had them at my 1st install but they have long since been gone

I don't know. I didn't add them. They were just there, which is why their disappearance is all the more disconcerting. I tend not to monkey with settings. I'm a user, not a techie.

This didn't work, even with a reboot.

Here's a simple fix you can try:

If you previously checked "In the future do not
show me this dialog box" when a dialog warned
about the possibility of reducing the quality of
your images, the following fix may restore your
option to rotate.

Open a picture in the Windows Picture And Fax
Viewer. Hold down the Ctrl key and left click the
X in the top right corner of the window.

==================================
For the resize option... go to the following
link and download and install: ImageResizer.exe

http://tinyurl.com/36n

Then you can open any folder that contains
images and you will have an option to resize.
Just right click the selected image files and
choose Resize Pictures from the menu. You
can select one image or a whole group.

For the "Rotate " option...

Here's a simple fix you can try:

If that did not restore your option to rotate...

Try this:

go to...Start / Run and type:

"REGSVR32 SHIMGVW.DLL"
(without the quotes)(Yes, there's
a space between 2 and S)

Click...OK.

That didn't work either. It just closed the window. I'm
trying detect and repair now.

When you ran the command...did you type it correctly?

Try this:

go to...Start / Run and type:

"REGSVR32 SHIMGVW.DLL"
(without the quotes)(Yes, there's
a space between 2 and S)

Click...OK.

If you did it correctly, you will see a diaglog box that says:
"DllRegisterServer in SHIMGVW.DLL succeeded"

Yes, I ran the command correctly. I copied and pasted w/o quotes. Just did it again and it said, as it did the last time, that it succeeded

OK...it was just a thought.

Here's a slightly different command that might be worth a try:

"regsvr32 %windir%\system32\shimgvw.dll"
(without the quotes)(Yes, there's
a space between 2 and %)

As I previously said...let us know if you discover a fix.

Hi Thomas,

I don't see the original part of this thread but wanted to chime in. Are
you unable to rotate the images at all. You choose rotate and nothing
happens?

If so, please try the following:

Open a picture in the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer.
Hold down the Ctrl key and click the Red X in the top right corner.
You will receive a message that all rotation messages you have surpressed
have been reset.
Try and rotate the photo again and see if this fixes the issue for you.

Hope this helps!

Thx,

Did you click No and Don't Show Me Again when a dialog warned about the possibility of lossy rotate.

If so change
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ShellImageView
ShellImageViewWarnOnLossyRotate to 6 (probably is 7). If you want the dialog back

Delete ShellImageViewWarnOnLossyRotate
from HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DontShowMeThisDialogAgain

Hi David,

You may want to note that the following is easier and keeps the user out of
the registry :)

Open a picture in the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer.
Hold down the Ctrl key and click the Red X in the top right corner.
You will receive a message that all rotation messages you have surpressed
have been reset.
Try and rotate the photo again and see if this fixes the issue for you.

Thanks,
