im in the middle of editing critical windows files, to completly alter the
apperance of both the boot screen, the start menu, and the log out screen
located in:
$~c:\windows\explorer.exe
$~c:\windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
$~c:\windows\system32\logonui.exe
but ive come into a problem. the file BITMAP/1/1033 (in fact many of the
bitmaps) are decompiled as 32 bit bitmaps, but when i change the picture (ive
tried: 16 bit Pallet, 24-bit, 256-mill clrs, 32 bit) and the only one that
works is 16 bit, (but it alters the colours fundementally and severly)
basiclly, does anybody know of a descent image editing program that will save
bitmaps as the correct format (using the correct pal system)

my other questions, where are such graphics as borders? slides?
(file paths and names plz)

As you've learned, the bitmaps used require palettes to display correctly. Pretty much any graphics editing program should be able
to save the pallet in the file (even MS Paint), but for this purpose, your best bet is to use a dedicated program like BootXP,
LoginUIXP, etc.

Why you want to make your own....
OK, there are reasons but i use LogonUIBootRandomizer for changing boot and
logon screens. It simply works great. I have tried BootXP and others but
the boot screen is very rubbish and low colors after changing with those
programs but if i use LogonUIBootRandomizer it is intact and works.

I think bootxp lets you choose your own bitmaps images for boot screen. No
color problem, it will change automatically.

But ithink that Boot Editor is good....
