PCX Files - Can't view

O/S XP Home - My computer had some sort of crisis about 6-8 moths ago and
when the dust cleared there was a little difference in the way things were.
Suddenly, I had a "Welcome" screen (which I can live with) but I was no
longer able to view thumbnails of PCX graphic files. I have gone to
"Tools/folder options/file types" and nothing works. It has been suggested
that the O/S may be corrupted. Can I reload XP over what I've got? The
event that occurred happened so long ago that I don't want to use "System
Restore". I need these files infrequently but need them nonetheless.

Xp has the option to repair an install when you boot from your XP disc which
may solve it, but yes, you can install XP over itself to re-write things.
You may lose some personal settings while doing that though.
