PCI Network Card Installation after Upgrading from ME to XP

I've recently upgraded from ME to XP Home successfully. I've now installed a
Belkin Wireless G PCI Network card into a spare slot in my desktop.
Unfortunately, the driver for the card would not install and Belkin support
staff are telling me that its because it can't tell whether to load the ME or
the XP driver and that the Network card will not work with my desktop. Is
this purely a Belkin problem or a general hardware upgrade issue with XP Home
upgrades? Has anyone else had this problem or found a way around it.

Belkin never fails to disappoint!! Personally I keep well clear of their
networking gear - it very often doesn't work. As you have upgraded to XP,
you need the XP driver, Belkin support are very wrong!!

I would suggest going to their website and downloading the latest driver.
You need to identify the ID no of the card (e.g F5D7000 ) . If you are not
sure what it is, download Everest Home
http://www.lavalys.com/products/overview.php?pid=1&lang=en . It will give
you details of the card and probably give you a link to click on to get the
driver.

An upgrade, as apposed to a clean install can lead to problems, having said
that have you tried a manual install of the new device?
Belkin tech may be assuming that you have a dual boot sys, ie winme and
winxp.
It may also be that the card can only be installed when logged on as the
Administrator.

It doesn't find it at all whether searching the net for it, or if Ipoint it
at the CD that came with the card. It says 'The hardware was not installed
the hardware because the wizard cannot find the relevant software'.

I didn't make any mention of dual booting, but I guess they could have
misunderstood.
I haven't tried a manual install, but would be interested to know how that
would be done, is it fairly straightforward?

You may not have the right driver on the CD. Look for the current XP
driver at Belkin's web site to download.

If your Belkin card is shown in Device Manager, with probably an exclamation
mark - not working - Simply update driver Btn and point it to your Belkin CD

I have tried pointing directly at the driver on the disk and the one
downloaded from the website, it doesn't seem to matter it still has an
exclamation mark next tothe device and says it can't start because of a
problem (code 10). Appreciate your suggestions but I can see only 2 options:
1 take it back and demand my money back
2 take the PC backto ME install the card and then upgrade to XP (a days work
after which it still might not work)?

Also still waiting for Belkin to call back 10 hours later!!

Thanks I've tried installing from disk and from the websites download and
each timethe device has an exclamation mark next to it (whichIthink is an
improvement on a question mark?) and says it can't start because of a
problem, 'code 10'.

In one of your other responses you mention 'taking back to ME'. If in the
upgrade to XP you elected to retain the option to recover to your ME
installation. Delete any ME folders. Reboot and see if drivers can now be
installed.
I assume you've tried physically moving the card to another slot.

Don't miss another option: you're under-upgraded.
Go on and upgrade to XP Pro.
Not that Home is a complete crippleware, but many things
go wrong on it.

With Home version you can't normally log on as administrator.
This is why I advice to upgrade to XP Pro.

I am logged in as administrator. Why would I want to through more money at it
by getting XP Pro just on the whim that it might work, that doesn't make
sense to me.

Pavel, your comment about Pro vs Home is complete and utter drivel. You
should know better than spout such mindless crap.

I hadn'ttried moving it to another slot......till now. I swapped it over with
the modem and it has now recognised the driver and appears all set to work.
Thanks very much for your help DL, it seems you were spot on with that
advice.
