PC Painfully Slow

Running Windows XP Home Edition with various programs installed, nothing
major with about 17GB free disc space.

My problem is my PC takes between 5 & 10 minutes to start up, and starting
up any program can take just as long.

Is there anything Ican do to speed up my PC??? I am not expert so you would
have to explain it in leymans terms

Any help would be greatfully appreciated as its very very frustrating

The single most common thing these days that accounts for what you're
describing is malware infestation. I
recommend that you go to Malke's Malware Removal site at
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware and follow
the instructions there.
