PC Keeps 'Shutting Down'

N

N Dunn

My PC keeps shutting down about every two minutes, even when I am in
the middle of using it. When I hit the power button it comes back up
in exactly the same place it left off, or after a minute of so it will
come back up on its own.

Until yesterday it was going into hibernation in the same way so I went
into the Power Options program in the Control Panel and disabled the
hibernation mode.

I think it started after some MS automatic updates last week.

Is there a System Rollback-type option for Win 2000 like there is for
XP (and if so, how would I get to it), or does anyone have any other
suggestions please?

Thanks.

Any error message? Also check Event Viewer for errors.

No error messages and nothing in the Event Viewer. Actually, it's not
going into 'shut down', but 'Standby'.

Try turning off the standby mode.

Sounds like the profile may be corrupt. If the profile is corrupt, you can
rename the profile(while logged on as local admin), then when the user logs
on again a new profile will be created from the image in \default user. You
can then copy over the items you need from the renamed profile. Copy the
folder contents not the folders themselves. When your sure you have all you
need, you can delete the renamed profile(s). Use the import function of your
e-mail software. Don't overwrite ntuser.dat

| Done that; Standby is set to 'Never' in Control Panel.

I'm logged on as Administrator and when I try to rename the profile
folder (in C:\Documents and Settings - is this the right place?) it
says: "Administrator is a Windows system folder and is required for
Windows to run properly. It cannot be moved or renamed. "

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Follow the steps in this article to replace the local administrator profile.
