PC freezes and restarts after DSL installation

I installed Yahoo! SBC DSL on Thursday and have been having problems with my
computer freezing and restarting suddenly ever since. After it restarts, I
get the following message:

The system has recovered from a serious error.

A log of this error has been created.

Error signature

I found basically the same in the Event Viewer:

The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x000000d1
(0x8ac02ec0, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0xf8e7ade3). A dump was saved in:

C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini042205-06.dmp.

Error code 000000d1, parameter1 8ac02ec0, parameter2 00000002, parameter3
00000000, parameter4 f7973de3.

Later, I unchecked "Automatically Restart" in Startup and Recovery and got
the following blue screen last time:

A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage
to your computer.

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

I am unsing SBC DSL and have been for a couple of years.
At first I had the same problem. Using the DSL drivers
right off SBC's CD will cause this. Go to SBC's site and
download the latest drivers for their software. Since then
I have also inserted a firewall/router (Linksys) between my
local LAN and my DSL modem - no problems for two years.

How odd, usually you see the error listed (you've a USB error) is due to the
device actually being on a USB port. Your DSL modem already goes to a NIC
card? Then I'd remove any USB devices and see if the problem continues, if
it doesn't look for updated drivers or re-install the current drivers as
they might have become corrupt.

Thanks, Bill. I had trouble finding the latest drivers from SBC's site and
decided to uninstall their software all together. I was still having the
same problem after I uninstalled it so I went and reinstalled the entire
operating system. Even if I don't have all that SBC Yahoo! software
installed, I still get the same errors, freezing, and sudden restarts. My
Internet connection still works, though, and pages load just fine.

Now I'm beginning to wonder if this problem is being caused by the Ethernet
card. I had just bought a new one and installed it before installing the
DSL. It's a Linksys 10/100 EtherFast PCI card.

I saw the following in the System Event Viewer:

Warning:
"Your computer has detected that the IP address 192.168.1.64 for the Network
Card with network address 000C41E6A82E is already in use on the network. Your
computer will automatically attempt to obtain a different address."

Error:
"The IP address lease 192.168.1.64 for the Network Card with network address
000C41E6A82E has been denied by the DHCP server 192.168.0.1 (The DHCP Server
sent a DHCPNACK message)."

When I submitted the error report to Microsoft, this message came up:

After restarting, go to the Windows Update website. Click Custom Install,
select optional hardware updates and then install all 10/100 Ethernet Adapter
(an983.sys) updates.

So you haven't been having problems before and then all of a sudden you get
these messages?

Are you using the same card I was using, Linksys 10/100 EtherFast PCI?
After all that happened (described above) I decided to replace the Linksys
card with a Netgear GA311 Gigabit Adapter. That one is great and I don't
have any of those problems anymore.

I never quite understood the message about installing missing updates, I
never found them in Windows Update, either. Even tried looking for newer
drivers but never found any that worked.

Norma, my computer's been restarting at random times the past couple of
days while I'm in the middle of doing stuff. After I send an error
report, I get the same message you do about installing missing updates
for a 10/100 Ethernet Adapter.

I haven't changed anything in regard to how I connect to the internet,
so I don't understand why this would be causing my problem.
Additionally, upon checking the Windows Update site, the suggested
update isn't even listed!

Can you tell me what happened after you got this message?

I wish I could tell you what happened, but I just stopped getting th
error message. I don't know what caused the error, and I don't kno
what stopped the error. Sorry I can't be of much help..

I had this very same problem. It was a result of updating our Networ
Antivirus software. I noticed that all the machines which experience
the crash had ADMtek 10/100 983 NICs, and that the PCs crashed whe
trying to Print.

I resolved this as follows:
On the XP machines - Went to Windows Update - Did a custom instal
which Identified the ADMTek NIC as requiring an update. I installed th
update.
Win 2K machines - Had the same problem but windows update did not fin
the necessary update. So, I went to www.driverguide.com and installe
the latest driver. After a bit of hunting around this worked.

Same problem here, now on 2 pc's both having Linksys nics. Apparently,
there hasn't been an effective solution. The only difference for me is
that the pc's will occasionally reboot during browsing of 'my network'
folder.
