Nasty Stop Errors and Restarts

Hi,
I'm having troubles with my pc for the last weeks that seem to get
worse in the last days. i'm experiencing sudden BSOD's or Restarts,
that *always* happen when i'm connected to the internet, mostly with
IE(ver 6). i recently installed NAV 2007, also using SpyBot. both of
them show nothing. i also ran 'Memtest' utility for 600% with no errs.
i use XP pro sp2, 512Mb Ram, P4, 2.40Ghz.

The most "popular" BSOD is:
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL with stoperr 0A.
and a few of:
DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL with other stoperrs.
Here goes a bunch of system events from last 2 days:

How's your network cabling? I ask, because I've often seen hardware
issues such as failing HD present as randon STOP BSoDs, and not just
the disk-orientated (FATxx, NTFS) ones either.

I'd also check HD with HD Tune from www.hdtune.com - any bad blocks on
the slow surface test is reason to replace HD irrespective on how
shiny SMART summary claims things to be.

HD bad blocks map to particular parts of the file system, so a bad
block within Internet or network code could appear to be related to
online contexts only.

I take it you have firewall enabled? Malware can become more active
when online and can cause crashes.
The most "popular" BSOD is:
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL with stoperr 0A.

Yep. Often those have nothing to do with what the description of the
errors would lead you to believe; they can be quite general.

IOW, they may tell you where the body dropped after it was shot, but
not tell you where the body was shot before staggering to a halt.

How's Safe Mode and normal Windows with MS Config suppression? Be
careful when testing the latter online, as the suppression of
3rd-party services and startup items may disable some defenses.

well, something has been changed for the last 5-6 days, for the
better i hope. i finally was able to send 2 Err reports to MS, and
got *same* replies, saying- SmartLink device is the cause for the
problem, recommending upgrading its device manager.
now, i'm using an ADSL(1.5) connection, but for some reason the
old phone cable was still connected between the Line-Filter and
the P.C (internal NetDragon Modem). now, since there is no *valid*
upgrade for Smartlink modem, and it's not used anymore, i've
disconnected the cable, disabled the device and turned SmartLink
service(Slserv.exe) to manual. also did some cleanning with
Ad-Aware and installed IE-Spyad, for security.
well, i can say now, after 5 quiet days, that sudden Bsod's and
Restarts are gone(Tfoo-Tfoo, Touch wood etc). i say *sudden*,
because there are 1 or 2 sites that *i know* would cause me a Bsod.
these sites own dynamicaly Flash-rich pages, and today, indeed,
after a few seconds i had a Bsod, which i never had before:
BAD_POOL_HEADER with Stop-Err 0019. (no MS reply)
now, 2 weeks ago i installed Adobe Flash-Player 9 over the old
Macromedia Player 7. could that be the reason?
I'd also check HD with HD Tune from www.hdtune.com - any bad blocks on

i will certainly check HD.

Firewall is enabled.

haven't checked yet Safe Mode. by MS Config suppresion, do you
mean *all* 3rd-party , including Security ones, such as NAV?
in fact, i have only 3 of that kind- Symantec, Nvidia and SoundMax.
i do control Start-up from time to time to check for changes.

SmartLink, eh? Google( SmartLink )... hmm, ungood...

http://modemsite.com/56k/smartlink.asp

Deffo modem, and chances of updates are poor, I'd think.
for some reason the old phone cable was still connected

OK... did the PC crash whenever the phone rang? :)
also did some cleanning with Ad-Aware and installed IE-Spyad

What did you find? What's IE-Spyad? Oh, OK; something like Mike B's
HOSTS or Spyware Blaster.
BAD_POOL_HEADER with Stop-Err 0019. (no MS reply)

Dunno. It's gone (as at 19 March) that's the main thing... could be
the mismatched modemware trying to answer the phone?
i will certainly check HD.

I had a client's PC that crashed with a "huh?" BSoD (may also have
been IRQ_NOT... one) especially if left unattended. Screensaver was
one that displayed random pics, and some pics had bad sectors in them!
Firewall is enabled.
Guud.

That's what my client had, as I recall.

That's why I warned about staying offline when you did this, yes...
in fact, i have only 3 of that kind- Symantec, Nvidia and SoundMax.

OK. I'll leave it to others to wax lyrican on NAV :)

Running Windows-based av to kill active malware is like striking
a match to see if what you are standing in is water or petrol.
