Nonsense!

We are much better off if Microsoft integrates various useful components
WITHIN the OS.

Add-ons and glue-ons invariably create problems of compatibility, speed and
clunkiness that we just don't need.

Put the capabilities IN the OS -- don't force the user to chase around after
a dozen little undercapitalized fly-by-night companies to get the software
capabilities he needs.

Until recently, Dell provided installation CDs with systems they sold. They
now provide only a restore CD, and sell the installation CD for an
additional $10.

Still better than Acer. They won't sell me an installation CD,
period.

That will certainly have an effect on my buying decision next time.

As far as I know, it's a rare OEM that will. $10 isn't very much and the
availability of an installation CD at a low price is the reason I now
consider Dell to be the most desirable of the big OEMs.

I certainly will not buy a computer from anyone without getting an OS
installation disc -- and I won't advise anyone else to do so.

Let's say you now have a box with an OEM version of Windows XP Professional
SP2 installed.

When Vista is released and you want to buy it are you going to be unable
just to buy an upgrade from Microsoft and then be able to port the OS to a
new computer after the first one craters?

This is all getting very complicated just to thwart thieves -- pirates.

What we really need to do is go after the thieves hammer and tongs -- rather
than making tens of millions of honest folks suffer.
