Partitioning Hard Drive

B

Bob

I just purchased a new computer with Windows XP Home Ed.
I looked up the MS instructions for partitioning the HD
under computer management/disk management and tried
following the instructions. However after right clicking
on the "free space" the none of the options include "New
Logical Drive", "Primary Partition", "Extended Partition"
or "Logical Drive." I logged on as aaaan administrator as
far as I can tell. I also attempted to follow the
instructions using the "Command Line", but kept getting
errors in the syntax though following the instructions
repeatedly. Can any one explain the problem/ solution? I
previusly used Partition Magic on my old machine, but
can't see shelling out all that money for something that
I'll only use once. I've also heard of problems using PM
with XP.

If your computer came with XP Home installed, then its unlikely that there
is any "free space" on the drive to make a new partition in. You'll need a
3rd party utility like Partition Magic or BootIt Next Generation to resize
your existing partition to make room for the new one.
