The USB connection is for copying digital still images (Panasonic calls them
Photo Shots) from the camcorder to the PC.

The iLink or IEEE1394 or Firewire connection is for importing video and
audio to the PC.

The USB conection needs the relevant software (which should have been
included with the camcorder) installed on the PC before you can copy the
images from camcorder to PC.

The firewire connection (you'll need to purchase the correct cable and also
a firewire card for your PC if you don't already have one) should
automatically identify the camcorder once it's connected, and turned on in
VCR mode and launch MovieMaker.
