PageFile_REGISTRY Entries

G

Guest

I did a search and found many entries; I found none that addressed the issue
below:

Symptom: Slow shutdown of latest clean install of WXP_SP2 compared to
previous installs.

Status: I searched the registry keys and values for 'PAGEFILE'. I found (4)
entries that related to clearing the pagefile at shutdown. One entry was not
understandable to me.
Three (3) entries had Identical values regarding clearing the pagefile at
shutdown. The value was (0), which if memory serves, zer-o means NO. These
(3) entries where found HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\*ControlSet001 -
*CurrentControl Set002 - *CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory
Management\.

The fourth entry listed below is my problem. I can not confidently interpret
it. It is located as follows:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SeCEdit\Reg
Values\MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Control/Session Manager/Memory
Management/ClearPageFileatShutdown.

The entries in the right hand pane for this listing are:

DisplayName=Shutdown: Clear virtual memory pagefile
DisplayType=dword:00000000
ValueType=dword:00000004

I do not understand the 'ValueType=dword:00000004 entry. Therefore, I do
not know if all the values here support NOT clearing the pagefile as is found
in the first three (3) entries I describe, OR if the values above are in
conflict with the values in the first three entries. I hope this is
understandable.

thank you

You only need to be concerned with CurrentControlSet. Looking in;
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Select
you'll find the D_Word values for
"Current"=dword:00000001
"Default"=dword:00000001
"Failed"=dword:00000000
"LastKnownGood"=dword:00000002

CurrentControlSet is volatile and will always be an image (at boot) of
what's defined in ControlSetx where x = the value of "Current"

Choosing last known good boots the system with the control set that last
successfully booted your system. Control sets contain system configuration
information such as device drivers and services.

Clear Page File At Shutdown

If ClearPageFileAtShutdown is set to 1, shutdown takes a *long* time.

Check this registry key...
Start | Run | Type: regedit | Click OK |
Navigate to...
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\
Session Manager\Memory Management
Value Name: ClearPageFileAtShutdown
Data Type: REG_DWORD
Value Data: Set to 0 to not clear at shutdown.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\
Session Manager\Memory Management
is the key. ClearPageFileAtShutdown should be a Value Name in the right
hand pane.

Shutdown: Clear virtual memory pagefile is a Group Policy, the registry
entry should be ClearPageFileAtShutdown

Hello Dave...
I "think" you may be using shorthand which I was unable to follow.
It appears you are starting where I did at:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory
Management\ H
However, if so, I found none of the right pane entries you listed....

thank you Wesley.
I have checked the registry key you cite in your reply below.
It is listed to NOT clear the PageFile at Shutdown (value 0)

I additon, my xp is home addition and no group polices are in force or
instituted....

If ClearPageFileAtShutdown does not exist then the default of 0 is assumed.
So if you need it to be 1 then ADD the REG_DWORD.

For slow shutdown...

You are having profile unload problems if you experience slow logoff (with
Saving your settings for most of the time while logging off). UPHClean
helps.

If you see a lot of Userenv/1517, Userenv/1524 or Userenv/1500 errors in the
Event Viewer, download and install the User Profile Hive Cleanup Service.

This decreased my shutdown time a bunch. Takes any where from 10 to 20
seconds to shutdown.

C:\Program Files\UPHClean\uphclean.exe is added.

The User Profile Hive Cleanup service gets added to Services and
uphclean.exe wiil run all the time. I am one that doesn't like to have any
extra services running, but I am sold on UPHClean.

Hello again,
I have UPHClean installed. It is a fine little program.
No Userenv/1517, Userenv/1524 or Userenv/1500 errors in Event log. I check
those logs often. I am experiencing a problem connecting with the "Server'
service which is not listed in Service on my computer and I assume the error
relates to startup...
I will check the sites to which you provided links and read up.

I read that the -- is the key that controls ClearingPageFileatShutdown is
the value (1) is entered.
I must confess, I am still very curious about the following entries I found
and included in my originial post. Do you have any insight into the data as
pasted below?

The fourth entry listed below is my problem. I can not confidently
interpret it. It is located as follows
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\SeCEdit\RegValues\MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Control/Session Manager/Memory
Management/ClearPageFileatShutdown.

The entries in the right hand pane for this listing are:
DisplayName=Shutdown: Clear virtual memory pagefile
DisplayType=dword:00000000
ValueType=dword:00000004

thank you.

This will restore the Server service (lanmanserver) so it will be listed in
Services.msc.

Open Network Connections...
Start | Run | Type: ncpa.cpl | Click OK |
Right click Your Connection | Properties |General tab |
Install button | Highlight: Service | Add button |
Highlight: File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks | Click OK |
Close

This is from my machine...
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SeCEdit\Reg
Values\MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Control/Session Manager/Memory
Management/ClearPageFileAtShutdown]
"ValueType"=dword:00000004
"DisplayType"=dword:00000000
"DisplayName"="Shutdown: Clear virtual memory pagefile"
-----

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\
CurrentVersion\SeCEdit\Reg Values

Apparently that key is the Group Policies listed in the Group Policy Editor
(gpedit.msc).

[[RegistryType Is a number that defines the type of the registry value as
follows:
1 - REG_SZ
2 - REG_EXPAND_SZ
3 - REG_BINARY
4 - REG_DWORD
7 - REG_MULTI_SZ]]

[[DisplayName: Is the string that ultimately appears in the security options
section of the SCM UI's. This is usually a replaceable parameter that refers
to an entry in the [strings] section of the Sceregvl.inf file thus making
localization easier. ]]

[[DisplayType: 0 - Boolean: Causes the UI to render two radio buttons to
"Enable" or "Disable" the registry value.]]

from...
How to add custom registry settings to Security Configuration Editor
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q214/7/52.asp

So...

DisplayName is what you see in Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc) i.e.
Shutdown: Clear virtual memory pagefile...
Local Computer Policy\Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security
Settings\Local Policies\Security Options\Shutdown: Clear virtual memory
pagefile

DisplayType If you double click Shutdown: Clear virtual memory pagefile in
gpedit.msc you get two radio buttons; Enabled and Disabled

RegistryType is probably ValueType and since the value is 4 it means
REG_DWORD in this...

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\
Session Manager\Memory Management
Value Name: ClearPageFileAtShutdown
Data Type: REG_DWORD
Value Data:

So, fugetaboutit!

Mr. Vogel.
You helped me out and gave me an education all for free. Thank You..!
I hear you about the regkey values you sent me. I copied them to my notepad
that I keep for XP info I pick up hear and there that is useful....
I also appreciate the insight into starting a lost service. By doing so, I
eliminated event errors which I just can not dismiss as irrelevant, and it
also made for a smother and more efficient operation to have the service
loading, even though I chose not to use it in my network settings.....
The internet really brings out what we humankind are all about... The good,
the not good, and whatever. I preaching now. We need to keep it free,
especially since we here in the USA may have allowed our freedoms to be
snatched away one night by a thief so long ago. If the people of the planet
would unite as an issue comes up, we just might save the world........

Peace and thanks.
