Page Down flips through several pages instead of just one

There have been on several occassions when the presenter presses the page
down button on the projector's remote, the slide flips through several pages
instead of one.

This has happened at the beginning and in the middle of a
presentation--first half goes fine and then BAM page down flips through
several slides.

A user has reported this happening even when pressing the right arrow or
page down key on the laptop's keyboard.

Anybody come across this? This is killing me cause being a setup/support
person for meetings/presentations, when that glitch happens in the middle of
an important presentation or when the CEO is presenting, I just want to run
and hide.

Here are the specs:
Powerpoint 2003
Projectors: Dell 3300MP, Dell 3200MP
Laptops: HP 6710b, IBM T40
Presentations are ran in Slide Show mode

Initially I thought it was the remote, but this has happened with both
projectors and laptops.

Only common variable I can think of is that Office SP2 and updates haven't
been installed. Could that be it? I hope so. I've searched the internet
and can't find a fix or any forums talking about this.

Would it better to just use PowerPoint viewer instead?

Could it be the presenter's power point file? This has happened with two
different power point files.

First things I would do is put a fresh battery into the remote. And install
ALL update for Windows AND Office.
Is it the remote which came with the projector you are using? Can you try a
wireless mouse or presenter to use with the laptop instead of the projector?

Best regards,
Ute

Do everything it says here: http://www.pptfaq.com/FAQ00034.htm

By all means, apply all updates, service packs, patches, bandages, sterile
wraps, ointments, snake oil, olive oil, oil...and try to reproduce the
problem. If no change, it will be a better place to begin troubleshooting.
Are the USB cables from the projectors connected?

You may also want to check your mouse scroll setting. via the Windows
Control panel. I had a remote that used to do this until I changed the
scroll setting from 3 to a setting of 1.

Yes, USB cables from projectors were connected.

I've ran Office SP2 and Office updates on the laptop.

CEO is giving a presentation on Monday. I will do several dry runs of the
presenation file and cross my fingers the glitch doesn't appear.

Thanks for the tip! That leads to another thought, I haven't run the CD (if
there is one) for the projector's usb cable on the laptop. I can't say I've
noticed a CD however in the projectors case, and I just let Windows provide
whatever, when I plug that usb cable in--additionally the remote works so I
never thought twice about a CD. So good good ... something else to try!

Self notes (while I have them in mind):

HP6710b ... did it have SP2 for Office 2003 installed? This ruled out the
IBM laptop as being the issue. I believe SP2 is on there however.

Presentation running from flash drive? When the glich happened the
presentation files were running from a flash drive. Haven't been able to
witness the glitch (if it happened) when presenations were run from the local
HD.

Does the laptop's presenation software interfere in some way? On the IBM
laptop there is Presentation Director, which provides an onscreen display to
switch between projector/screen/both, but nothing in there I see regarding
mouse/pointing devices.
