Outside USB on OS

M

Mark G.

Am Running XP Pro and have a few onboard USB ports and in one case, one of
the ports goes out via cable to a 4 port USB hub. Now my problem is that
whenever I plug some items, not all, into this hub, the OS doesn't recognize
or acknowledge it. 2 particular items or a Logitech joystick and a MS
Sidewinder joystick. Although if I plug this directly into a port on the
computer, whether it be one on the front or the back of the PC, it does just
fine. But back to the hub, if I plug in some things like a thumb drive or a
card reader, it does see them from the hub. Why is there this strange
behavior? Shouldn't everything be recognized by that hub by XP Pro? While it
isn't really problem, it just puzzles me and I thought I would ask to see if
some of you could fill me in? Thanks much.

This is not going to help you much, but it is "accepted" that some
devices simply do not work through hubs. This is indicated within
documentation that accompanies some devices. Also, one sometimes sees
statements along the lines of "if you have problems, blah... blah...
then try to connect the device directly, rather than through a hub...".

Sometimes, USB devices will not work correctly when the USB/Hub is not a
'self-powered" model. There are two types of hubs, ones that the power comes
over the USB ports and the other where the hub has its own power
adapter/transformer.

Which type of hub do you have?
