Output set to 16:9 - but I get 4:3!

I've returned to MM2 after a long break, so I may be missing something
really basic, but this is baffling me. I loaded a 3 GB AVI into MM2,
deleted a section, and saved it as DV-AVI. It is 1912 x 1082 AVI,
which is very close to 16:9. I save the movie as DV-AVI (PAL), with
Tools > Options > Video Properties set to PAL 16:9. And all looks OK
in Setting Details:

File type: Audio-Video Interleaved (AVI)
Bit rate: 30.0 Mbps
Display size: 720 x 576 pixels
Aspect ratio: 16:9
Frames per second: 25

But the output has an AR of 4:3, not 16:9! How can this happen please?

How did you save a dv.avi in 1912x1082?
Or do you mean you saved the avi as a dv.avi?
If so, what sort of avi is the original?
Where did this file come from? Screen capture?
What app made it?

I suspect it is the above, maybe a divx.avi file and therefore doesn't
conform to the standard tv pixel ratios and it cannot be made to reproduce
as 16.9 as the player doesn't know what to do with it.
