Outlook in Office Trial versions and Windows Mail

From reading the newsgroups, it is now clear that I cannot upgrade to Outlook
2007 using a trial version unless all other mail applications have been
uninstalled from my machine. I have two questions issues subsequent to that:
(1) when attempting to export my messages from Windows Mail (so that I can
retain my mail prior to uninstalling), I get a MAPI error. Verbatim it is:
"Export Messages Error - The export could not be performed. An error occured
while initializing MAPI". How do I solve this issue?
(2) I already downloaded the trial version of Office (Standard) prior to
finding out about the mandatory "uninstall" issue. Do I need to uninstall
Windows Mail before I download a trail version or can I use the trial version
I have once I export my mail and uninstall?

OS is Vista Home Premium

Please - I need help!!

1) only *other outlook versions* have to be uninstalled before you can
install the Outlook 2007 trial
2) You can only export Mail to Outlook once outlook is configured (ie setup
and able to run)
