Outlook hijacks OE "default mail handler" status

I prefer OE6 as my email handler. But each time I go into Outlook 2003, that
program hijacks the "default mail handler" status. I have to physically
change which program handles email (in IE6 Tools | Options | etc).

How can I get this back to the way it was before IE7 was installed (and
subsequently removed, at great pain)?

See this article for possible help:

How to use the Set Program Access and Defaults feature in Windows XP Service
Pack 1
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/328326/

Hopefully the settings there will override what Outlook is doing.

More info:

How to change the default mail client for Internet Explorer
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/154359/EN-US/

Also, in OE, go to Tools...Options...General tab, and make sure OE is set as
the default there. Make sure there's not a similar setting set in Outlook,
or they will fight each others (sorry I don't have Outlook 2003 here at home
to tell you exactly where to look).

And, note that when you update Outlook via Office Update - such as updating
the junk mail filter - it will steal back the default email association as
well.

I only tried it once, after resetting programs. But it worked. OE was
default. I opened Outlook. OE remained the default.

If this works, it will be a wonder! Thank you a ton.

Oops . . . When I exited OE, Outlook and IE, opened Outlook and closed it
again, Outlook was suddenly the default mail handler.

Will try the other article.

Nope, the other article doesn't help either. It stops at v. 4, I'm at v. 6,
and it uses lines that no longer exist.

thanks for trying

Asked/Answered in WinXP General:

I'm afraid the only way to avoid the behavior is to decline any Outlook
(OL)
updates. IOW, your default Mail Client will be hijacked to OL every time
you install any OL update (e.g., the monthly Junk Mail Filter updates).

The Office team and MS is aware of this behavior: They do NOT see it as a
problem and will do nothing to fix it. Go figure.

BINGO! Outlook is no longer the default, nor will it ever be again, as long
as I keep "updates" away from it. Thank you, Vincenzo.

Now the only thing to do is deal with the niggling problem of an
announcement every time that Outlook isn't the default mail handler, and I
should change something. Pah! Never. Maybe here's a chance for Dell to earn
the ungodly amount of money they charged for software help.

YW. Glad to help and thank you for the feedback, Charles.

Well, they got me!

Seems I cannot synch my PDA with Outlook unless I have the email handling
activated. So I did it, giving in once more. And now almost all my Contacts
entries are suddenly double.

Where's the nearest Apple store?
