Outlook hangs on exit

OS - XP professional, Outlook 2000
Problem. When I try to exit outlook it appears to exit but
the message "Please wait while Microsoft Outlook exits"
never goes away. I am not sure as to whether outlook is
really shutting down or not. Is there a fix for this.
